About this listen

With over 110 million copies of his novels in print, David Baldacci is one of the most widely read storytellers in the world. Now he introduces a startling, original new character: a man with perfect memory who must solve his own family's murder.

MEMORY MAN

Amos Decker's life changed forever - twice.

The first time was on the gridiron. A big, towering athlete, he was the only person from his hometown of Burlington ever to go pro. But his career ended before it had a chance to begin. On his very first play, a violent helmet-to-helmet collision knocked him off the field for good and left him with an improbable side effect - he can never forget anything.

The second time was at home nearly two decades later. Now a police detective, Decker returned from a stakeout one evening and entered a nightmare - his wife, young daughter, and brother-in-law had been murdered.

His family destroyed, their killer's identity as mysterious as the motive behind the crime, and unable to forget a single detail from that horrible night, Decker finds his world collapsing around him. He leaves the police force, loses his home, and winds up on the street, taking piecemeal jobs as a private investigator when he can.

But over a year later, a man turns himself in to the police and confesses to the murders. At the same time a horrific event nearly brings Burlington to its knees, and Decker is called back in to help with this investigation. Decker also seizes his chance to learn what really happened to his family that night. To uncover the stunning truth, he must use his remarkable gifts and confront the burdens that go along with them. He must endure the memories he would much rather forget. And he may have to make the ultimate sacrifice.

Memory Man will stay with you long after the turn of the final tick.

Critic reviews

"The successful pairing of the narrators, with both voices being equally engaging, ensures that the dual narration works.... Both McLarty and Cassidy demonstrate a natural talent for characterization and pacing, which make this investigative thriller especially engrossing." ( AudioFile)

audio quality was distracting.

having a male and female narrator was distracting and not necessary. Also the volume seemed to go in and out..

Good Book if you can ignore the edits.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Maybe

What did you like best about this story?

It's a well written book. I liked the plot and there was plenty of mystery.

What three words best describe Ron McLarty and Orlagh Cassidy ’s performance?

I thought the readers did a good job. It's the editing that sucked. Sentences and phrases were edited in and the voice sounds so different at times I wondered if it was the same person. There is too much time lapse between some dialog. The music, especially at the beginning is too loud and very distracting.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

No

Any additional comments?

Overall, the story is very good but the audio editing was not. I found it very distracting. Whoever edited it should be fired.

Good Story - Weird Production

What didn’t you like about Ron McLarty and Orlagh Cassidy ’s performance?

The performance was fine - the audio production was really weird. Strange music or sound effects from time to time. The editing was noticeably choppy at times.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Distracting audio

Background noise and frequent, obvious splices made this a hard book to listen to. I'm very surprised this recording was released.

edge of the seat thriller

very cleverly constructed story that kept me the edge of my seat the whole time. the beginning of the audio had some clicking noises in the background that were distracting & caused me some worry that something was wrong with my vehicle while driving... otherwise 5 stars

Almost a Homerun

The concept and story line: riveting. The performance by the reader: so-so. Sound editing: horrible. David Baldacci’s books deserve better technical support than this and readers, such as myself deserve better. I am on a limited income and have declining vision. I cannot spend my money frivolously. Amazon Audible, I depend on you to bring me quality choices!

So many twists

This was a fast moving story and a great start to a series. I am looking forward to the next book and how far DB can take this mans extraordinary abilities. Plenty of twists and turns while still keeping it personal.

Start of an Awesome New Series

Very unusual new mystery with a flawed hero lacking emotional intelligence, but with total recall of everything he ever saw or read, as a result of an old football injury.
The plot is both complex and convoluted. It holds the reader's interest from the first page through the last.
The narrator is excellent.

After the first few chapters, it got better

Took me a while to get past the first few chapters--but then it was walking hand in hand, trying to figure out the bends & twists along with Decker, the main character. M

Very satisfactory ending
