About this listen
One exceptional boy journeys into the ashes of society to find the cure for a devastating plague in this riveting post-apocalyptic stand-alone set in the same world as the USA Today best-selling The Girl With All the Gifts.
Once upon a time, in a land blighted by terror, there was a very clever boy.
The people thought the boy could save them, so they opened their gates and sent him out into the world.
To where the monsters lived.
"Strange and surprising and humane" (Lauren Beukes), The Boy on the Bridge is a gripping, powerful story that will make you question what it means to be human.

Story
The sun is bloated, diseased, dying perhaps. Beneath its baneful light, Shadrapar, last of all cities, harbours fewer than 100,000 human souls. Built on the ruins of countless civilisations, Shadrapar is a museum, a midden, an asylum, a prison on a world that is ever more alien to humanity. Bearing witness to the desperate struggle for existence between life old and new is Stefan Advani: rebel, outlaw, prisoner, survivor.

Story
This is the way the world ends...for the last time. It starts with the great red rift across the heart of the world's sole continent, spewing ash that blots out the sun. It starts with death, with a murdered son and a missing daughter. It starts with betrayal, and long dormant wounds rising up to fester. This is the Stillness, a land long familiar with catastrophe, where the power of the earth is wielded as a weapon. And where there is no mercy.

Editorial reviews
Editors Select, May 2017
The Girl with All the Gifts was my absolute favorite novel of 2014, so I couldn’t have been more thrilled to return to this story. The Boy on the Bridge is something of a prequel; it returns to the ravaged post-apocalyptic world in which we met Melanie, but the events take place closer to the initial outbreak of the hungry plague. Once again, I find myself unable to say much without giving too much away. At the heart of this novel, like its predecessor, is a steadily building and ominous mystery that kept me listening as often as possible. That, and the always incredible Finty Williams, whose performance is as captivating as ever. It’s no surprise that she seems to be Carey’s preferred voice for his stories. Whether you’ve listened to The Girl with All the Gifts already or not, The Boy on the Bridge stands alone as another engrossing sci-fi thriller from an author who is quickly becoming one of the most exciting in his genre. —Sam, Audible Editor

The Last of Us
Naughty Dog's postapocalyptic video game The Last of Us is a masterclass in storytelling. Celebrated for its complex ruminations on grief, morality, and redemption, this unique take on dystopia has maintained a steady fanbase since 2013. That following is set to grow following the debut of HBO's television adaptation—a breakout hit that sacrifices none of the emotional stakes or brilliant character work of its source material.

Very surprising.
Would you consider the audio edition of The Boy on the Bridge to be better than the print version?
I just finished it two days ago and as I pondered the story I realized how well written it was and how it was a perfect sequel to the girl with all the gifts. The ending it absolutely excellent. The narrator is one of my favorites. A must read if you loved the girl with all the gifts. And yes I know its not as great at that book but that is ok. It is just as it needs to be.

Amazing story
This is more like a prequal/sequel to The Girl with All the Gifts. I liked the story a lot. I still favor the first book over this one, but I enjoyed the narrator and twists this story has to offer.

A must-read!
Carey has created a world so real it follows me through my daily life, calling me to return whenever I have a free moment. Williams has brought a special kind of life to the characters, somehow managing to differentiate between them without the exaggerated voices other narrators often affect. This book stands on its own merits, as well as adding a compelling new dimension to its sister novel, The Girl With All the Gifts. Enthralling, hauntingly beautiful, the author calls into question the meaning of being human and the subjective/objective value of each of our lives.

Perfect summer read
I loved Boy on the Bridge as much as Girl With All the Gifts. Great story and storytelling. I totally disagree with the reviews that said this was not nearly as good as TGWATG, but make sure to read TGWATG first, even though this is a prequel.

Not TGWATG, but pretty close. An enjoyable listen.
I almost didn't buy this one, due to the reviews being almost uniformly negative. I liked TGWATG so much, though, that I gave it a shot, and was pleasantly surprised. There are so many books, audiobooks, movies, and television shows that are so similar in premise that it feels like some computer is punching them out, and the zombie genre is one of the worst. So when I find a book that begins on that premise, but turns out to have quite a different plot, I enjoy it. This ties in with the Girl with All the Gifts quite well, I though. The performance by Finty Williams was excellent, just as it was in the previous book. Hope to hear more from her.

Excellent story and wonderful narration.
What did you like about the story? I liked how you get a sense of what will happen in "The Girl With All The Gifts" plus how the two stories meet up in the end of this book.
Did you like the characters and what about them did you find interesting? I loved Steven. The book gave me an view of the world through his eyes. You take the touch from a friend or loved one for granted, but for some one who can't handle that simple thing, it's an emotional roller-coaster. For me, I learned what that is like by reading/listening to this book. I like books where a character has some sort of challenge they have to conquer, be that physical, emotional or mental. I liked the way Steven deals with situations he isn't comfortable with. It shows what an intelligent and strong young man he is.
Wouldn't you recommend this book? Yes, but not to young children. It's too violent and they language was sometimes a bit strong. Definitely worth 5 stars.
I would also liked to read about the people at the end of the book and what happens to them. If another book comes out, I'll definitely read it.

Wow!
This was an amazing book and a great ending! The movie did not do the 1st book any justice and almost made me not listen to this second book. Im so glad I did. Don't let them make this into a movie if they can't do a better job.

Just as good as the first
Love the storylines and characters this author comes up with - they really engage with some complex concepts in a very subtle way. The narrator also adds a lot to the enjoyable listening experience of this book.
