About this listen

A "suspenseful, atmospheric tale...punctured by a gut-punch twist" (Entertainment Weekly), A Boy and His Dog at the End of the World is a story of survival, courage, and hope amid the ruins of our world.

My name's Griz. I've never been to school, I've never had friends, and in my whole life I've not met enough people to play a game of football. My parents told me how crowded the world used to be, before all the people went away. But we were never lonely on our remote island. We had each other and our dogs.

Then the thief came.

"This unputdownable story has everything - a well-imagined post-apocalyptic world, great characters, incredible suspense, and, of course, the fierce love of some very good dogs." (Kirkus, starred review)

Critic reviews

"Fletcher's suspenseful, atmospheric tale imagines a near future in which our world is in ruins.... An adventure saga punctured by a gut-punch twist." (Entertainment Weekly)

"[A] heart-and gut-wrenching tale of a post-apocalyptic world.... A Boy and His Dog at the End of the World takes a memorable journey of loyalty and love and transforms it into an unraveling mystery of self-discovery and exploration.... This is the story of trust and loyalty within a family, and finding your own pack - even if they're different from the pack you were born into." (Bookpage)

"The hunt for Jess propels this story forward like a rocket, and Fletcher does a masterful job keeping the stakes high and the suspense crackling while still creating plenty of space for readers to get to know Griz and explore this fascinating not-quite-empty world. This unputdownable story has everything-a well-imagined post-apocalyptic world, great characters, incredible suspense, and, of course, the fierce love of some very good dogs." 5 STARS--Really Engrossing and Different!

I knew I needed to rate this book 5 STARS despite a few concerns I had because I couldn't get the story out of mind upon finishing it, and I missed spending time with Griz a great deal. After all, he had been with me for several days and didn't feel ready to say goodby.

Not your typical post-apocalyptic story as we were missing a macho leader, an excess of gruesome bad guys, and lots of shoot'em ups. A little bit refreshing, if you ask me. There was still plenty of tension and suspense, enough surprises to keep you off balance, and likeable characters such as the requisite evil antagonist whose actions drove the story.

I don't want to provide too many details as this story is best listened to knowing little of the details. Unfortunately, I started reading too many reviews and there were at least two jerks who had to stick in spoilers, leaving me with important knowledge I was better off not having. Still I enjoyed the book a great deal, and I can even envision listening to it a second time.

My few hesitations? Firstly, the narrator reads his own book which is always tricky. Well, he is a magnificent narrator but he is no 'boy' of any age! He is clearly a mature man. Secondly, in the story, Griz seems older, himself, as he is much too worldly and knowledgeable and mature to be called a 'boy.' Teenagers are notorious bad decision makers and are not THAT competent and self-assured, especially in very unfamiliar circumstances.

Do not let my concerns sway you into not listening to this audiobook. It is lots of fun, engrossing, and has sufficient unexpected twists to be very enjoyable. I do recommend it without hesitation.

Great Story Telling!

Loved it! Griz ...what an intelligently written character. Another reviewer mentioned that all the foreshadowing ruined the book for them, I'd have to disagree, that's the thing that kept me listening. Reminded me of how old timers sometimes tell stories.
Very well developed world and characters to fill it. Would love to read another story like this, dogs a must! Hope we meet with Brand again someday, and his sisters! I feel like I went a Viking and came away with this treasure of a story. Thanks C.A.Fletcher!

Technically excellent. Spiritually bereft.

Thoroughly enjoyed the descriptions of the melancholy remainder of our world. The apocalyptic premise is believable and well described. Character development and dialog is beautiful.

Why the author deems it necessary to denigrate religion throughout is confusing. It adds nothing to the plot. His description of certain character's self serving defects, i. e. sin is masterful, however. A little too much handmaid's tale in the broth. Snuck it in late, so I'd invested too much in the story not to finish it off.

What the love of a dog will drive one to do

I felt I learned a lot about how to survive in a post apocalyptic world. I loved the dialog with the people that came before. I loved the final twist. The characters were tangible and vivid.
