About this listen

There are some places in this world that go far beyond any normal definition of “haunted”. These places are so evil and so diabolical that they become gateways to hell itself. The Fuller Farm is one such place.

It is said that old man Fuller conducted unspeakable acts, blood rituals, and human sacrifices, all in an attempt to gain the ultimate knowledge, the ultimate power. And then, he was killed - horribly murdered on his own land, leaving the house to stand as a vacant monument to his wickedness.

But once a door is opened, it can never really be closed. Now, the stars are right. The gateway is ready to once more unleash unspeakable horror upon the town of Harmony, Indiana. And this will be one Halloween that they will never forget!

Spook House is Michael West's latest novel based in Harmony, Indiana, joining Cinema of Shadows, The Wide Game, and short stories such as "Goodnight" and "For the River is Wide and the Gods are Hungry".

Creepy and descriptive

Spook House is a book that is creepy, and dramatic. The book is very descriptive and we'll written. There is one part that pissed me off but I will not give a spoiler alert it took my husband to keep me listening. I liked the storyline. I received this review copy audiobook at my request and I am leaving my honest review voluntarily.

It's going to be a heck of a Halloween in Harmony!

What better place to stage an October haunted attraction than in a real haunted farmhouse, built on a foundation of blood and unthinkable evil atrocities. Sprinkle on a spider-dog (or four), an army of sadistic centipedes and drench with a healthy dose of super soaker saline solution.

It’s going to be one hell of a Halloween in Harmony, Indiana.

Entertaining and fast paced with the appropriate amounts of blood and creepy goings on. 3+ stars with very good narration.

Smalltown Horror Done Right

Michael West is an author I've enjoyed a couple times in the past and this is no exception, and the narrator falls into that category as well. In this case they're working together on presenting a tale of a place where horrific events happened, and have inexorably changed things such that gateways can open and more horror can come through. The small town of Harmony Indiana then has it's hands full with the evil about to occur. And once that hits, the tension is high and stays there for the duration of the story and it is very entertaining.

Paranormal Signs

I had a really hard time getting into this story. It seemed a bit disjointed and I didn’t really care for any of the characters. My lack of connection with the characters made their plight meaningless to me which made me dislike the story even more. I can’t even say that the monsters bothered me that much even though I did like the theory behind them. Being armed with a super soaker to kill the monsters seemed a bit silly to me, although it was unique, even though the author clearly had issues with the movie Signs where water was able to kill the aliens. To me this wasn’t much of a step up from that.

I did like Michael West’s writing, while I didn’t care for the story, I liked all the pop culture references and ideas. West obviously has put a lot of thought into this story and I think that he is a talented writer and look forward to what else he comes up with. While this story was not for me, I think that he has a lot of potential and is an author to look out for.

Hagood did a good job with the narration. I liked her different character voices which helped me to discern each one even though I still got them a bit confused.

Spook House

This is an interesting horror story with creatures and monsters that resemble those from Lovecraft stories. It is not a scary tale that keeps you up at night jumping at shadows it is more of a fantasy or science fiction story about horrendous monsters. The story starts out well but I think that it was drawn out way too long. There are a lot of interesting characters that could have been developed more but everyone seems to be one dimensional. There is not a lot of character depth or growth which made it hard for me to really get lost in this tale. Soon I was getting bored and wondering just how much longer the book was. I am a big fan of horror and Lovecraft but as this book seemed to draw inspiration from that it missed the mark for me. Narrator Nila Brereton Hagood speaks clearly and moves the narration at a good speed.
