About this listen

A Mass Murder. A Disappearance. A Cemetery Ransacked.

It looked like another ordinary day in Los Angeles. Then night came...Evil as old as the centuries has descended upon the City of Angels - it comes as a kiss from the terrifying but seductive immortals. Slowly at first, then by the legions, the ravenous undead choke Los Angeles with bloodthirsty determination - and the hordes of monstrous victims steadily mount each night.

High above glitter city a deadly contest begins. In the decaying castle of a long-dead screen idol, the few remaining human survivors prepare to face the Prince of Evil and his satanic disciples. Whilst the very forces of nature are called into play, isolating the city from the rest of the world and leaving it at the mercy of the blood-hungry vultures of the night...They Thirst

Scary, not Sparkly!!!

Good, old-fashioned, scary vampires. Yay!! No sparkly, lovesick nonsense.

This one kept me listening for far too long into the night. Kept adding 'just another 30 minutes' onto the timer . Really enjoyed it. Great narration as usual from Ray Porter, good solid story. Ahem, The Strain???

Would have loved a sequel.

But the maths just doesn't add up. If the vampires turn someone every time they feed, then that's a geometric progression (if my schoolgirl maths of decades ago is correct). Before long they run out of their food supply, surely? What happens then?

New kind of Vampire

Great modern take on Vampires. From the beginning, I was hooked. Great story, great characters, and of course, amazing narration by Ray Porter.
Definitely 5 stars!!!

Awesome narrator!

Until "They Thirst", I had never heard an audio book by Ray Porter. Now that I have, let me say adamantly that I will be actively searching for more read by this man! His narration is among the best I've experienced; without any doubt, I'd recommend him above many others.

His natural reading voice is clear and strong. It is also filled with just enough emotion to maintain interest without drifting into melodrama. Mr. Porter truly excels at individual voices. When he is speaking as a specific character, each different person is easily identifiable. Each and every member of the cast has an unique voice; differing accents, tones, speech patterns, etc. He is a one man stage show!

Robert McCammon's vampire epic has always been one of my favorite horror novels. It's a close tie for me between "They Thirst" and "Salem's Lot" for my top "go to" blood sucker book. However, as enjoyable as it is, the enjoyment factor spikes when listening to Ray Porter's rendition! Add this to your collection without hesitation.

Couldn’t stop listening....

Robert McCammon has become my new favorite author. This is the third book I’ve listened to and I’m hooked. Ray Porter does a superb job! I’d recommend this book to anyone who loves vampires and horror.

Great book

I'm a big fan of Robert R. McCammon, I discovered his books in the late 80's and have read most of his work, I must say, the reader for this book was maybe the best I have ever heard, hey must have done 20+ different voices in this book and everyone was great, I especially loved Ratty, to any who are on the fence and like a good Horror/Thriller, I would say don't hesitate, you won't be disappointed

Well Done!

I've been reading a ton of Horror lately and honestly, most of it is pretty cheesy. But not this one....I loved it. I kept thinking that I didn't want it to ever end. I don't want my time with these characters to end in just 2 more hours! I love The Swan Song by this author so I picked this up, but I really did not expect to enjoy it even half as much as I did. Good vampire stuff. If you like horror, then I recommend!

They Thirst

Is a good story but nothing new.
The characters need it more development some of them has no background at all
The action really never get to a high point is more from maybe the middle of the book to the end.
The end is setup for a sequel or series.
If there is a second book will buy it

Excellent

The story isn't new. Vampires, obviously. But, RM somehow manages to make this vampire story feel new.

As always, RM develops these characters and makes you care about them or hate them. When a good guy/girl hits a stroke of luck, you're cheering for them in your head. When something bad happens to a good guy /girl, you are angry and worried. And the bad guys are even better. RM is great at creating bad guys you love to hate. This story is no exception.

The narration though.... Holy effing cow. Ray Porter is a master of voices. He's like the Whitney Houston of narration. This would be an excellent book just in writing. But Ray Porter turns this into a work of fine art.

Very happy with this purchase. Sad it's over!

Pretty Good Tale

Overall, I would compare it to a modern Salem's Lot. It was a great story but the ending was a bit of a let down.
