Publisher's summary

Love comes when you least expect it in this captivating new novel in the Wescott Regency romance series from New York Times best-selling author Mary Balogh.

Lady Jessica Archer lost her own interest in the glittering excitement of romance after her cousin and dearest friend Abigail Westcott was rejected by the ton when her father was revealed to be a bigamist. Ever practical, however, once she's 25, she decides it's time to wed. Though she no longer believes she will find true love, she is still very eligible. She is, after all, the sister of Avery Archer, duke of Netherby.

Jessica considers the many qualified gentlemen who court her. But when she meets the mysterious Gabriel Thorne, who has returned to England from the New World to claim an equally mysterious inheritance, Jessica considers him completely unsuitable because he had the audacity, when he first met her, to announce his intention to wed her.

When Jessica guesses who Gabriel really is, however, and watches the lengths to which he will go in order to protect those who rely upon him, she is drawn to his cause - and to the man.

Jessica Archer’s Modern Romance

My favorite Westcott novel yet! The storyline is perfect sampling of a romance and satisfies fully more than it leaves you wanting more. The scene in Hyde Park with most of the previous male protagonists all together was the most thrilling scene I’ve read in a long time!

Great narration

Rosalyn Landor’s narration is the listener’s gift. Emphasis and nuance are applied in the right places giving an authenticity to the characters’ emotions. Since this is a character driven storyline it is essential that the characters are believable and their actions true to their emotional development and subsequent actions - the excellent narration facilitates our understanding and belief in the veracity of the characters’ motivations. Gabriel’s character was a bit more complex than Jessica’s which helped keep the story moving by allowing the listener to buy into and anticipate how they will grow and develop as a couple.
I was expecting more conflict between Gabe and Jess as they got to know each other and confronted the looming problem of Gabe’s potential charges of rape and murder. I recommend this book to readers looking for an audible book with a very competent narrator who can take a routine storyline and lift it to the next level making for an enjoyable listening experience.

Gabriel, the angel

Gabriel may or may not have been an angel brought to earth but for Jessica he comes to be everything. She knows almost from the start that she wants this man to love her and to forever be his someone to romance.
Really enjoyed this book and didn’t expect to because in past books Jessica hadn’t always been the most likeable character. Young and self- centered, she stays that way through all the other books until she awakens one day to find the world around her has passed her by. She then chooses to grow up and find love, and along comes Gabriel. She steals his room just as he steals her heart.

My favorite of the Wescott series, so far!

Wonderful story! It’s romantic, exciting with twists and turns. I realize some don’t like the repetitive nature of this series but if the reader has not read the other books in the Wescott series, it’s necessary. Kudos to another great narration by Rosalyn Landor! I seek out the audio books she’s narrated.
