Publisher's summary

NOW A PRIME VIDEO SERIES from internationally bestselling author Harlan Coben

Mickey Bolitar's year can't get much worse. After witnessing his father's death and sending his mom to rehab, he's forced to live with his estranged uncle Myron and switch high schools.

A new school comes with new friends and new enemies, and lucky for Mickey, it also comes with a great new girlfriend, Ashley. For a while, it seems like Mickey's train-wreck of a life is finally improving—until Ashley vanishes without a trace. Unwilling to let another person walk out of his life, Mickey follows Ashley's trail into a seedy underworld that reveals that this seemingly sweet, shy girl isn't who she claimed to be. And neither was Mickey's father. Soon, Mickey learns about a conspiracy so shocking that it makes high school drama seem like a luxury—and leaves him questioning everything about the life he thought he knew.

First introduced to readers in Harlan Coben's adult novel, Live Wire, Mickey Bolitar is as quick-witted and clever as his uncle Myron, and eager to go to any length to save the people he cares about. With this series, Coben introduces an entirely new generation of fans to the masterful plotting and wry humor that have made him an award-winning, internationally bestselling, and beloved author.

Definitely Give This One a Chance!

I loved this book!
I've never finished a book and then gone straight to my computer to rate it. There have been some great books that I've read, but I had to see if there's a sequel to this one right away. (There is! 'Seconds Away')
The narrater was great. There's a great story line, lots of action, it was witty and suspenseful, emotional, even heartbreaking in moments and I'd recommend it to anyone! I think that it may have been written for teens, but I enjoyed it as much as I've enjoyed any Harlan Coben book, and I've loved most of them! I will let my teenager listen to it as well, and I think she'll love it. It was clean, not over violent, no swearing or sex, and he even managed to keep a scene in a strip club chaste. The ending was great, a nice surprise, but a definite cliff hanger.
I'm really glad that I just read it and don't have to wait for a year to get the sequel.
I'm a definite follower of this series, Harlan! Keep them coming!

Bolitar 2G Kicks Off New Coben Series

Harlan Coben switches gear from adult novels to YA by switching the focus of his Bolitar series to high schooler Mickey, introduced in the prior entry (#10) of his uncle Myron's series. The focus may have shifted to a teenager, and the language as well, but Coben does not shy away from his usual theme of looking at the seamy underside of life in suburban New Jersey.

Early in Shelter, Mickey is exposed to a number of mysteries: Who is the mysterious Bat Lady? Is his father really alive? Why did his new girlfriend Ashley suddenly disappear? Who is the baldheaded guy following him and the tattooed fellow looking for Ashley? Other than leaving one major thread hanging for future entries in the series, Coben does a good job of bringing it all together.

But what always makes a novel pass or fail are the characters. Mickey himself is likeable and believable, thanks in large part to Nick Podehl, a prolific narrator whose youthful voice lends itself well to YA. Mickey's sidekicks are entertaining, his antagonists cartoonish but funny. And the bad guys are actually scary. The ultimate reveals work -- the one specific to this particular story is not necessarily the be all and end all of surprises, but it does have the virtue of being topical.

Coben has breathed new life into the Bolitar line.

Harlan Coben has been one of my favorite authors for a long time, but I never got into the whole sports thing. His sense of humor more than made up for it though. Now, hes lost the sports, but unfortunately hes also lost the sense of humor.

If you can keep from comparing this books to his others, which for me was difficult, you can enjoy this amazing story with its new protagonist, a brooding teenager with a troubled past and a mysterious future. If you cant keep from comparing the Bolitars...at least hes kept the intrigue in the family, and it was always a great one!
