About this listen

Salem, Massachusetts, was home to one of the most infamous periods in American history. False witches were burned at the stake while actual witches stood by and watched in reverie. The flames scratched the skies with horrendous height as the heart of man darkened. At least that's how the story goes. Sparrow is a teen who loves everything vintage. Jason is her best friend who relies on their friendship as a steady constant in his life. They are both eager to graduate high school and leave their old lives behind for something greater. However, neither of them could have predicted that they would find themselves in Salem, MA, during one of the world's most controversial time periods. This is a story about discovering oneself and finding out what truly matters in life.

Enjoyed the take

I liked the main characters. Sparrow and Jason were fun to shadow. I enjoyed how the story played out. I did not expect the ending. I did enjoy the new take on a familar subject! I admit I would have probably enjoyed this book much more had I read it versus listening to the audiobook. The accent/reading speed/overall narration were a struggle for me.

Fun story

If only the narrator wasn't so flat in her reading. Without the change in POV with each chapter I wouldn't be able to tell the characters apart!

A fun story, but needs a different narrator

Overall, a quick fun listen. First-person present tense was jarring. Some plot points and characters were introduced, but never really explored. The narration wasnt bad, but it lacked emotion and seemed too academic, as if I was listening to a text book.

Jason and Sparrow

A cute YA book about James, a boy from an abusive household and his best friend, Sparrow a shy girl. The story takes a dramatic twist about half way, and the second half of the book with its supernatural elements is better than the first half.

Strange and Wicked Indeed

I really enjoyed this book. I got it because it fit a criteria for a book challenge I'm doing. I didn't have any expectations or experience with this author. I was pleasantly surprised. This was strange, but in a good way. I liked the main characters and the whole feel of the book. It was perhaps a bit too YA for my normal taste, but it was still enjoyable and fun.

The main problem I had with this book was the narration. There wasn't any feeling or emotion in the voice. The narration was so flat and slow and boring that I had a difficult time staying engaged. I received a free copy of this audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left my honest review. The free copy did not influence my review in any way.

A start to a series on witches

Their are parts of the story that you question and never get an answer on. I can see a series expand from this and hope that some questions are answered in the next book.

If there is another book I hope that a new narrator is chosen. The story takes place in Salem and the narrator has a southern accent instantly pulling you out of the book. The narrator also does not provide much emotion or depth to the characters. It is hard to tell when one character is speaking to another as they all have the same tone.

I feel I need to listen again to see if I missed some information.

I was provided a free copy of the book in exchange for a honest review. The opinions of this review are mine and not influenced by the author or publisher.
