About this listen

After a nine-year absence, the fiercely resourceful Native American guide Jane Whitefield is back, in the latest superb thriller by award-winning author Thomas Perry. For more than a decade, Jane pursued her unusual profession: "I'm a guide...I show people how to go from places where somebody is trying to kill them to other places where nobody is." Then she promised her husband she would never work again and settled in to live a happy, quiet life as Jane McKinnon, the wife of a surgeon in Amherst, New York.

But when a bomb goes off in the middle of a hospital fundraiser, Jane finds herself face to face with the cause of the explosion: a young pregnant girl who has been tracked across the country by a team of hired hunters. That night, regardless of what she wants or the vow that she's made to her husband, Jane must come back to transform one more victim into a runner. And her quest for safety sets in motion a mission that will be a rescue operation - or a chance for revenge.

A bit too verbose, redeemed at the end

Review title says it all. My least favorite of the series. I hope it stays that way as I read the next one

I LOVED this book

What made the experience of listening to Runner the most enjoyable?

It was exciting engaging & brilliant

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

It certainly did. I crochet while I listen because I love reading but don't have the time. This way I can do both but many times I found I'd become so engrossed I forgot to crochet. I even played it while driving - every spare minute I could get I listened

What does Joyce Bean bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I really enjoyed her - she kept pace with the story. Her interpretation made the story more realistic. Some readers can undermine & spoil the book but that was so not the case here.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

All of it. It was an implausible tale told in a very plausible & educating manner & a lot of thought went into its plot not to mention how well researched the book had to be

Riveting

This plot had me panting and drooling for more. Totally captivating. Well written, full of believable action and vivid descriptions. Makes you feel like you're standing alongside the characters. Also well read by narrator. If you like action, I recommend this book.

Terrific

What I like most about this book, aside from the excellent narration, is that the story unfolds slowly rather than presenting everything up front. I've not read this author before, but I will be exploring his other books now that I've listened to his one.

Quite boring

The narration is fairly awful. The voice for the self absorbed young girl was very irritating and I was hoping she was going to be an early casualty. The main idea for the series is implausible so any deficiencies really stand out. The only positive is that Thomas Perry always moves the action along so if you’re listening for the purpose of having something diverting as a background noise this works. Nowhere near as good as the butcher’s Boy series.
