Publisher's summary

An ex-cop takes on a widespread criminal organization targeting midwestern towns in this new thriller from the author of The Old Man

When a sudden crime wave hits several small midwestern towns, the US Attorney for the region calls on Harry Duncan to investigate. An ex-cop known for his unorthodox methods, Duncan is reluctant to go up against a widespread criminal organization—but the attorney in question is Ellen Leicester, the wife who left him fifteen years earlier, and to her, he can't say no.

Initially brought in as a consultant to determine if the racketeering is severe enough to require an all-out investigation by the FBI, Duncan quickly finds himself in conflict with a syndicate far more violent than first suspected. As the investigation develops, he begins compiling a "murder book," the notebook in which a detective keeps records, interviews, photos—everything he needs to build his case. But his scrutiny of the gang soon makes Duncan a target. And Ellen, too.

A thrilling and suspenseful tour of crime-addled midwestern towns, Murder Book is signature Thomas Perry, with characters you won't soon forget, crisply-described action sequences, and breathlessly-tense plotting.

Love this author

This is one of my favorite authors, and I’ve have read many of his other works. The story line as the book progresses became murky and harder to follow. I restarted chapters several times, which is odd in itself, because his books have me so engrossed usually, my attention is all in. Not so with this one.
The narrator was unsatisfactory. His voice and usage of inflections was smarmy, and I found it difficult to get past this. His voice renditions to change characters was ok, but his voice for the protagonist, did not give me any confidence this was the good guy, as he sounded slimy.

Great story and lots of twists and turns

The great thing about this writer is he gets the story going in One Direction, and then pulls the rug out from under you. I’m going to be listening to more of his stories.

Liked every book. Only one left I didn’t read. I will be disappointed afterwards. Have fun.

Entertaining

I’ve liked some of Thomas Perry’s other books better and have read most if not all of them more than once as well as having them in Audible.
I listened to this newest book on Audible and finished it in a day. It’s a good story. I felt that some of the sparkle and oomph that I like in past books was not present in Murder Book. It just felt a bit flat.
I think that’s partly due to, in my opinion, an overly witchy ex-wife character. Her nastiness was hard to take and was a drag on the mood of the book.
But having said all that, Thomas Perry is one of my long time favorite authors and I was happy to start my day with his newest, Murder Book.

Always Thomas Perry

Story was good but choppy. Performance was great. You had to pay good attention not to love the thread as the book progressed. I love Thomas Perry.

Good

I like this character and the story. Didn’t have to suspend disbelief often. Perry doesn’t waste words. Keeps the story moving.
