Publisher's summary

“Intricately plotted with extraordinary characters and riveting action.” —Jack Carr, #1 New York Times bestselling author of In the Blood

In this electrifying thriller from the author of The Night Agent now on Netflix, CIA officer Sam Hudson races to find a deep cover operative loose in the U.S. and a mole in the Agency before they can launch a devastating attack on Washington, D.C.

For years CIA officer Sam Hudson has been hunting Konstantin, a Russian deep cover operative responsible for a string of assassinations in the West—and he believes a well-placed source in Geneva can finally get him close to the killer. But when their meeting is ambushed, Sam’s partner is murdered and he barely makes it out alive himself.

Back in the States, the bosses put him on leave and want him to drop his obsession with Konstantin, but Sam can’t let a man who’s taken so many lives slip away again. When he gets a mysterious call at the Lincoln Memorial just before a bomb goes off, he realizes Konstantin has followed him to the U.S.—and is targeting him and everyone close to him. Teaming up with fellow CIA officer Emily Pierce, he sets out to redeem himself and uncover a plot that has been lying in wait since the end of the Cold War, its elements hidden among the most iconic buildings in the capital.

With enemies lurking both inside and outside the Agency and the Russian threat looming ever larger, Sam must use all his training and nerve to stop Konstantin before he can trigger the plot to devastate Washington and bring the U.S. to its knees.

Outstanding novel

This was a riveting story with well-developed characters, unforeseeable plot twists, and a suspenseful ending. I chose this audiobook after enjoying Quirk’s work in the past and was pleased with this one as well.

Strong story

Believable story line. Enjoyed the narration and the characters. The US welcomes all these folks at our peril.

Very Entertaining

I thoroughly enjoyed the story. While the narrator was good, the performance would have also benefitted from a female narrator.

Thrilling to the End

It was really great! This is the second book I've read by the author, and both books were interesting, well-paced, and even unpredictable. The subject matter and themes are reminiscent of Clancy.

Clichéd

My second book, and third story overall, counting the Netflix show. There is something to the plot, as is with the other two, that makes it interesting enough, but execution of this story in this book is trite and very clichéd, even cringy, I'd say. There's a lot of vapid conversations, and a lot of nonsense that some writers keep including in their descriptions of the scene. It's just stupid. Two examples. First - "stay back, don't let him see you", says one trained and experienced agent to another highly trained and experienced agent. Advice that is clearly not needed. Similar advice is given multiple times throughout the book. Second - experienced and seasoned veteran of thirty years "paled visibly at the recognition" of a regular piece of data while our main character "kept emotion off his face" during tense scene when confronted with a surprise fact. There's too much of these descriptions and nonsense.
In the end, I couldn't even handle the ending. I stopped listening with 15 min of the final resolution. It was building up in me and it just became too much.
I think all this was there in my first book (the hour of the assassin) too but the first time experience was bearable, however, it became too much with a second story. I won't listen to, or read another book by M Quirk.

Good plot but weak characters

Quirk knows how to tell a story. Great plot throughout. But he could use some help with character development. His hero is two dimensional and his relationship with the female character is flat and not believable. I think he was too interested in making her an equal hero so that there is no complexity to her—or to the male hero either.

Predictable

A reasonable action yarn but the plot could be guessed by the end of the first chapter. This is an easy book to listen to but expect to roll your eyes a few times. Not a top pick, but it filled some hours on the road.
