Critic reviews

"Pimsleur programs provide plenty of positive reinforcement that will keep learners on track, and we found that Pimsleur gave us more proficiency and confidence in speaking the new language than any of the other language programs we reviewed." ( AudioFile magazine)

Too short

I love the system, however I think we should get way more modules by credit

Great for learning German on the go.

I'm going to be traveling to Germany next year and want to learn as much German as I can before I go. I already have a long commute, so these tapes seemed like a great solution for me. Now that I've finished this first set, I'm definitely going to be purchasing the rest of these lessons. They were easy to follow, and I feel like I'm actually starting to learn valuable communication skills rather than just spitting back vocabulary words. It's too early to tell just how much I'll learn, but I liked my experience enough to keep going.

An excellent approach to learning to speak German

Highly recommended for learning German conversation without being put off by having to remember complicated grammatical rules. You learn to speak grammatically subconsciously without hesitation. It takes time but it is a worthwhile investment.

Entschuldigen Sie!

This is great for pronunciation but I ignore what's said about not using written materials. I'm using this as one of many methods rather than explicitly adhering to the Pimsleur technique. Auf Wiedersehen. :^)

Excellent

I was fluent in German many years ago so this was a fantastic review for me since I’m planning a trip to Germany next year.

A doorway to German

German is hard, but listening over and over to this does help to get over the initial hesitation.

great course

It would be nice if they would add more refresher conversations at the end of each chapter.

For the serious learner

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I've used Innovative Language Learning all the way through. I've used the Sarah Retter books. I've gone through all levels of Duolingo and kept my lingots or whatever those are called full. I've use Fun Easy Learn. I listen to German music all day. I subscribe to several German youtube channels. This system and Paul Noble's are the best for forcing me to form sentences of my own, which is such a useful skill. And of course, I'm sure this system has so much more to offer. Right now I'm on lessons 11-15. It's very effective on the road. Just review the reading when you get home.

What other book might you compare German Level 1 Lessons 1-5 to and why?

Learn German with Paul Noble

Any additional comments?

If you don't like this book's style at first, then try Innovative Language Learning or the Duolingo app for a while. Those are geared towards being more fun. Afterwards, you'll want to come back to something like this when you're more serious.
