About this listen

How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days gets a millennial makeover in this romantic comedy by USA Today best-selling author Andie J. Christopher.

"The way Jack sets out to win Hannah back is really the stuff of true romance." (NPR)

Jack Nolan is a gentleman, a journalist, and unlucky in love. His viral success has pigeon-holed him as the how-to guy for a buzzy, internet media company instead of covering hard-hitting politics. Fed up with his fluffy articles and the app-based dating scene as well, he strikes a deal with his boss to write a final pièce de résistance: "How to Lose a Girl". Easier said than done when the girl he meets is Hannah Mayfield, and he's not sure he wants her to dump him.

Hannah is an extremely successful event planner who's focused on climbing the career ladder. Her firm is one of the most prestigious in the city, and she's determined to secure her next promotion. But Hannah has a bit of an image problem. She needs to show her boss that she has range, including planning dreaded, romantic weddings. Enter Jack. He’s the perfect man to date for a couple weeks to prove to her boss that she’s not scared of feelings.

Before Jack and Hannah know it, their fake relationship starts to feel all too real - and neither of them can stand to lose each other.

How to lose a guys in 10 days?

The book was a fun and easy listen and it kept me entertained the entire time, however it was almost too similar to how to lose a guy in 10 days (from the reverse angle), but a more up to date one. I enjoyed the narrator and the content but I just wish it wasn't as similar to the movie!

It was fine.

The story was basically how to lose a guy in 10 days with the addition of ‘cis-gender’ and ‘toxic masculinity’ references. It was fine, but nothing everyone hasn’t heard/read/watched before.

Meh

Story could’ve been better. It dragged on a bit. I see where the author was going but jeez it took a long time to get there. Cute quarantine listen though.

Perhaps another round of edits?

I was excited to listen to this book because as a woman of color, I love finding a new contemporary multiracial romance novel. The overall premise of the book was fun but the way race was presented felt a bit uncomfortable. The author does preface the book by saying she was inspired to write it based on her own experiences, and unfortunately I think that might of been a detriment to the book. I really wanted to like the main character, Hannah, as I identified with her personal struggle to fit in one box. But as I reached the halfway point of the book I realized there were no redeeming or “good” characters of color, whereas white characters like Jack and Hannah’s friends are written as saintly figures. There are “bad” white characters, but there aren’t any good ones who are people of color. I don’t think this was a deliberate tactic by the author, but it does feel a bit off putting as a reader. And as I got further along in the book, some of Hannah’s rants (especially about Black people) began to feel like diary entries that should be shared with a mental health professional. There was also use of problematic language such as “caught red handed” which is well known for being racists towards indigenous and native peoples, that was a bit concerning. I really wanted to like this book and I think the narrator did a great job, but perhaps a sensitivity reader would have eliminated some of these faux pas.

Great Book

What a cute story, I found myself laughing out loud at points, saying awwww, and smiling hard. This book is a good choice for romantic comedy. I really enjoyed this book and hopes the author finds the love she has written about.

A series of missteps....

Two intelligent characters get talked into doing less than stellar things for career advancement at the risk of a relationship that may work for the two of them. I am going to point out that I couldn't stand Hannah's boss nor did I like Jack's boss. Who pushes people to do things like this? I enjoyed the story and the ups and downs that Hannah and Jack faced but I thought the 2 weeks lasted a bit long. I tried to get into liking Hannah but I just couldn't and that has never happened to me. And maybe that is because I know people like her... but... I stopped caring if she was going to get out of her own way.

Slow Start to a Great Book!

This was a great book! At first, I didn't think I was going to like this book because the first few chapters were kind of slow. At one point, I wanted to put the book down fir good, but I'm glad I made myself stick it out. once I got past what both of them had to do to keep their jobs and made it ro there second date ( meeting Jack's mom), I was all in. From that point on, I was caught up. I was talking to the characters and grasping with excitement during some of their encounters. I was slick sad and mad at Hanna when they broke up! Having ro struggle through thre first few chapters u.s definitely worth it!
