A Phenomenal Book Club pick for November 2022!

A woman goes head-to-head with the CEO of a corporation threatening to destroy her neighborhood in this fresh and modern retelling of Pride and Prejudice by debut author Nikki Payne.

Liza B.—the only DJ who gives a jam—wants to take her neighborhood back from the soulless property developer dropping unaffordable condos on every street corner in DC. But her planned protest at a corporate event takes a turn after she mistakes the smoldering-hot CEO for the waitstaff. When they go toe-to-toe, the sparks fly—but her impossible-to-ignore family thwarts her every move. Liza wants Dorsey Fitzgerald out of her hood, but she’ll settle for getting him out of her head.

At first, Dorsey writes off Liza Bennett as more interested in performing outrage than acting on it. As the adopted Filipino son of a wealthy white family, he’s always felt a bit out of place and knows a fraud when he sees one. But when Liza’s protest results in a viral meme, their lives are turned upside down, and Dorsey comes to realize this irresistible revolutionary is the most real woman he’s ever met.

Laugh out loud Funny

A faithful Pride and Prejudice retelling for those who are into that. But also a laugh out loud multicultural enemies to lovers romance between an activist DJ proudly repping her 'hood (Chocolate City Rep is strong!) and a developer with a silver spoon stuck firmly up his a$$! Loved it! Great story, great narration. A++

great retelling

I loved it. I'm an Austen fan that loves a retelling. This one is a modern retelling w people of all colors, as well as LGBTQ people, represented. A perfect combo for me! It may not have been a perfect piece of fiction & took some liberties w certain Austen characters, but I really enjoyed it. & will be watching this author.

An amazing rendition of Pride and Prejudice!

I loved and laughed so hard (cried) to this version of the original classic and am looking forward to future books from this author. My hope is she writes more modern romance (or non romantic) from the classical version.

Whoa!!

I’m 5’7”, but the depth of the characters, set up and story are definitely 6’5”. I love how real and believable this book is. I was engaged in the characters like they were my friends retelling a story.

Loved it!

The narrators were perfect. They understood the assignment.

Delightful, smart and sexy

This is a delightful, zingy contemporary riff on "Pride and Prejudice." The writing is whip- smart and the dialogue pitch perfect. The lead narrator -- the Elizabeth Bennett figure, here a DC-based DJ with a keen social justice bent--is terrific, and she voices her various family members superbly. The delivery of the male narrator voicing the Darcy role is a little flat in contrast and far less expressive, but this is a minor quibble.

I really admired the ingenious and engaging parallels the author devised in her plotting of a modern-day P&P. While many serious current social issues are addressed--and debated--by the lead characters, there is also terrific humor throughout, andI found myself laughing aloud at several points.

One very major and very contemporary difference between this work and its predecessor is the steamy sex! I was not quite expecting those scenes, and though they are certainly vividly written, I personally found them a bit distracting from the larger story, which is at its core a big-hearted celebration of self-discovery and connection with families, both biological ones and created ones.
