About this listen

New entry in the best-selling Monster Hunter International series by Dragon Award-winning authors Larry Correia and Sarah A. Hoyt

When Owen Pitt and the rest of the Monster Hunter International crew are called away to mount a month’s-long rescue mission in a monster-infested nightmare dimension, Julie Shackleford - Owen’s wife and descendant of MHI founder Bubba Shackleford - is left behind. Her task: hold down the fort and take care of her new baby son Ray. Julie’s devoted to the little guy, but the slow pace of office work and maternity leave are starting to get to her. But when a routine field call brings her face-to-face with an unspeakable evil calling itself Brother Death, she’ll get more excitement than she ever hoped for.

Julie is the Guardian of a powerful ancient artifact known as the Kamaresh Yar, and Brother Death wants it. In the wrong hands, it could destroy reality as we know it. Julie would die before giving it up.

Then Ray goes missing, taken by Brother Death. The price for his safe return: the Kamaresh Yar. If Julie doesn’t hand over the artifact it means death - or worse - for baby Ray. With no other choice left to her, Julie agrees to Brother Death’s demands. But when you’re dealing with an ancient evil, the devil is in the details.

To reclaim her son, Julie Shackleford will have to fight her way through necromantic death cults, child-stealing monsters, and worse. And she’ll have to do it all before Brother Death can unleash the Kamaresh Yar.

It’s one woman against an army of monsters. But Julie Shackleford is no ordinary woman - she’s one tough mother!

Miss the drawl.

The story is all right, but definitely feels like Larry Correia didn’t write it. The continuity with the series is consistent.. The narration is not good ... not right. No southern drawl. No intensity. It feels like Bailey Carr didn’t listen to the rest of the series before starting her book. AND SHE MISPRONOUNCES LEAD CHARACTERS’ NAMES!!!!! Please redo it with Oliver Wyman!

This was not the best MHI story I have read.

This MHI book was a struggle to finish. it did not become good until the 7th hour of the book. They did Julie a disservice by constantly mentioning the baby. They made her sound super weak. I the last book while she was pregnant, she was still bad ass. In this book she was to whinny. This was a struggle to finish. MHI should never be a struggle.

A worthy addition to the MHI universe. Ms. Carr has done a fantastic job of boice acting also.

Good but MHI quality

Good book but a little let down for the series. I expected stronger reactions and moves for a woman about to go all out for her child. But I’ll definitely listen to it again and it was worth the purchase. Just let a little on the table.

Pretty good but could be better

Like some might have notice or said. The change of narrator felt a bit strange which make it feel a bit............ strange from the original. It is still quite easy to get used to it. Honestly speaking, it fits Julie quite well in my opinion. The old narrator made her fell like a .......mmmm....... a drama queen if that make sense. Well that me.

Story ........ is ok !!!! Nothing much to talk about. I won’t lie, story, kinda predictable. Especially the end which for some might see it a mile away.

Overall it was quite enjoyable but i hope to see...... mmmmm...... How to say well, anything thing else is quite a spoiler so i wont say much but you will pretty much notice it on the 1st chapter.

Why Change the Narrator

Story was OK, but the Narrator just wasnt up to snuff. I actually stopped listening to about 3/4 of the way through. I can honestly say I have never done that with any Correia Book. He is my favorite. He is quick enough to feed my addiction and very good. But this book just seemed to miss the mark. I am sure the next book will be better.

Wrong Narrator!

Tough Julie should not sound like a 14 yo girl!!! Plus she usually refers to her son as the kid. I am a huge MHI fan but I do not care for the last 2 books.

another superb entry in the series

I was nervous about Correia allowing a co-writer in one of the main storyline books of the Incredible MHI series, but Hoyt was a perfect choice. The only complaint I have is that it's probably going to be another 2 years before the next book in the series.

want sure about the narrator at first.

Ok, I'm a creature of habit. Not having Oliver narrate was weird at first, however perfect for the POV of Julie! long time Corriea addict every series and this addition to MHI is amazing! oh man is Julie a bas a$$! Love the series and want More!!
