Publisher's summary

Charlotte Holmes comes face-to-face with her enemy when Moriarty turns to her in his hour of need, in the USA Today best-selling series set in Victorian England.

A most unexpected client shows up at Charlotte Holmes' doorstep: Moriarty himself. Moriarty fears that tragedy has befallen his daughter and wants Charlotte to find out the truth.

Charlotte and Mrs. Watson travel to a remote community of occult practitioners where Moriarty's daughter was last seen, a place full of lies and liars. Meanwhile, Charlotte’s sister, Livia, tries to make sense of a mysterious message from her beau, Mr. Marbleton. And Charlotte’s longtime friend and ally, Lord Ingram, at last turns his seductive prowess on Charlotte - or is it the other way around?

But the more secrets Charlotte unravels about Miss Moriarty’s disappearance, the more she wonders why Moriarty has entrusted this delicate matter to her of all people. Is it merely to test Charlotte's skills as an investigator, or has the man of shadows trapped her in a nest of vipers?

Critic reviews

“Tense and atmospherically rich, particularly in the Cornwall chapters, the novel is interspersed with brief scenes of Charlotte and Ingram’s new intimacy, including some chuckle-inducing letters.... An enjoyable jigsaw puzzle in the Holmes tradition, with gothic thrills and a dash of romance.” (Kirkus Reviews, starred review)

Worth the listen

You will be mildly amused. I like that it is lefty to the imagination regarding love scenes. The ending was predictable but still surprising too. I’m waiting for the next book

Requires Full Knowledge Of Previous Installments

I have to admit, for the first half of this book I kept asking myself, “where is the author going”? It was not readily apparent what was going on. Obviously, things cleared up as it went on but the reader can get frustrated….if you like the series, you will like the book…but if you did not read the last installment, it is a requirement….go read that one first.

You Presume Rightly!

I love this series. Ms. Thomas’ plots keep getting better with each book as the main characters become more and more threatened by Moriarty. The characters continue to grow but I am especially entertained by the relationship between Charlotte and Ash. And of course, the narrator, Ms. Reading, does a great job as always! Can’t wait for the next book!

lots of names to keep up with

there are so many characters it's easy to loose track of who is who through out the story.

Loved the story.

I don't normally like 13hr audible mystery books (bad experience ), but this one was entertaining. I might be biased since I love this series, it was a good story.

So long, Miss Sherlock Holmes.

I am so upset that I have come to the end of this series. All books were well written with dynamic plots that kept me guessing and interesting story lines but not one part over done. I enjoyed the romance plots almost as much as the mystery. And Kate Reading as the voice maestro is glorious. I will definitely be looking into more audio books with her as the narrator. Sherry Thomas, thank you for this gift.
