About this listen

When Maud McIntyre sets up her own private detective agency, she never imagines her first case will involve murder.... A mystery in the Highlands? The Scottish Ladies’ Detective Agency is on the case!

Edinburgh, 1911: When Maud McIntyre and her lady’s maid, Daisy, form a detective agency, they never dream their first case will take place at a glamorous house in the Scottish Highlands. But when the duchess of Duddingston, concerned that a notorious jewelry thief will target her lavish weekend party, employs Maud to go undercover as a guest to find the culprit, the agency has its first case to solve....

Undercover with Daisy as her maid, Maud follows a trail of clues across the Duddingston House estate. And as she meets the weekend guests, she hopes one of them will reveal themselves as the jewelry thief. But when one of the house guests is discovered dead, Maud and Daisy realize they’re not only hunting precious gems, but a murderer....

As Maud and Daisy investigate, they realize that a connection in Edinburgh might hold a vital clue that will help them solve the case. Travelling back to the city, Maud hopes that what she and Daisy uncover will help them piece together the murder mystery at Duddingston House....

But when Maud receives a telephone call from the Duchess requesting urgent assistance, she realizes that the murderer didn’t have just one victim in mind. Speeding down the drive to Duddingston House, Maud and Daisy hear gunshots ring out across the estate. Will they reach the Duchess in time to save her? And will they catch the murderer in the act?

A warm historical whodunnit, perfect for fans of the mysteries of Helena Dixon, Verity Bright, T.E. Kinsey, and Catherine Coles.

Not very creative

Not very creative, not really a detective novel. If meant to inspire women, it surely did not

Entertaining

The accents were great. Enjoyable although I worked out who the murderer was fairly quickly.

Fun frolic with wit and intrigue

So enjoyed this book. Two great women doing the detective work they love in a buttoned up closed to women era. Lots of humor and tying together three different mysteries. Not just a one and done! This story goes on to a satisfying end. The narrator is skilled with voices so you know when each character is speaking!

Starts slows but gets exciting

I loved hearing the narrator’s Scottish accent! She did a great job with the characterizations.

The book is written historically correctly so you feel whatever is happening or being said is authentic to the early 1900s.

It did take awhile, more than halfway through, to really become engaged in the plot. But it was worth it!

The ending is quite satisfying!

The reader was fantastic

I loved the reader and the fact that the main character wasn’t perfect. But the social niceties of the era were pretty annoying. Characters seems not well developed.

Charming

As someone who loved The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency books, it was an easy decision to pick up this title when it went on sale. And while I can't say I'm the most intimately familiar with the setting and time period, I rather enjoyed the whole adventure with our novice detective tackling a series of case of varying severity. Definitely some great characters throughout and the main mysteries have just enough material around them that you might figure out some bits before the end.

Definitely a promising start.
