About this listen

Saddle up, lock and load, the Invisigoths are coming.

In the grand tradition of cinematic epics like The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai across the Eighth Dimension, Big Trouble in Little China and - well, that’s probably it, because there’s not much else to compare to those W.D. Richter masterpieces - comes Little Women with Big Guns, a wildly imaginative and bullet-fast tale of advanced warrior legions eager to escape their banishment in a parallel dimension, and the unlikely band of heroic “sisters-in-the-making”, bold and reckless enough to stand in their way.

Mighty Queen Nihilani and her depraved genius chief alchemist, Pageen, see their long-awaited chance to escape exile manifest in the form of the ultra-secret Bluegate Project’s teleportation experiments gone awry.

Those tests have done more than bring the vanquished queen and her mighty forces the promise of a conquering return to Earth. Brought out of the past and future to the present, respectively, New Mexico Territory farm girl Joliane “Liane” Lecroix and a blaster-armed, Martian-human-cyborg mine worker, the sodbuster’s kid, Liane, dubs “Amee”, end up literally running into independent investigative reporter Margaret “Mag” Tracer.

Led by the ghost-like apparition of Dr. Elizabeth “Eliza” Shandrach, the trio soon find themselves in a strange, waterless landscape ruled by Nihilani and her advanced, yet savage, army. They are humanity’s only hope against an impending incursion by a highly advanced army of invisible, disc-riding warriors.

Get ready for the ultimate in “woman on woman action", and, remember, it’s not the size of the gun that matters, it’s knowing when to use it.

Ok

This story had a good narrator but it just wasn't the kind of paranormal I usually like to listen to. It's interesting to say the least. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Woman on woman action, bolt action that is!

Sorry, I had to steal that headline from the book's blurb. It was just too funny not to put that up as my eye catcher because of the implications. Anyway, I hafta tell ya that Candela is quickly becoming one of my favorite writers. He really knows how to craft a story, infuse it with action, adventure, and danger. I have to be honest, that when I first saw the title I was expecting to get a revamp of Little Women in the same vein as we did Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter or Pride, Predjudice, and Zombies. I was expecting Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy to suddenly start packing some serious heat, and blowing dudes outta their saddles.

That isn't what I got.

Nope, if you read the blurb for the book, and I seriously suggest that you do since I don't recap or rehash because . . .BLURB, but if you read it you will see comparisons to Big Trouble in Little China and Buckaroo Bonzai. Yah, those comparisons don't really do it justice. I don't think you can compare it to anything. Maybe the Wizard of Oz on meth. . . nope, Candela already did that. Hmmmm, maybe if Willie Wonka was shown to an audience on an acid trip? Maaaaaybe. Point is there is nothing like this, and it is fun. The book is chock fulla action, gunpowder, otherdimensional beings, and some hardcore chicks out to save the human race. Yeah, I called them chicks.

If you can't concieve of anything I've said thus far, follow me, or understand that this is a book made purely for adrenaline rushes then this book ain't for you. If you love weird, exciting, fun, sometimes goofy, guns, gals, other dimensions, invisible foes, or just purely great writing then this IS the book for you.

I am kind of torn over the cover, as I love the centerpiece, but the side stuff is just distracting. All you really need is the cameo styled centerpiece.

Wannall does a great job narrating, I've heard him before and thought it was an incredible bit of work on his part here. He adds in a lot of emotion, drama, and danger with just his inflections, and he does voices quite well. I look forward to hearing more from him in the future. He is pleasant to listen to, and carries the story along quite well.

This was a fun book, and Candela knows how to keep your attention. You won't regret reading this, get it now. Even though I did receive a promo code for this review it in no way influenced my considerations of the material, and in fact, inspired me to be more honest. In fact, getting a code generally makes me harsher as a reviewer as I am more often concerned what someone like Me will decide based on my review.

The Ghosts, the Guns, and the Visigoths, oh my!

At first it seemed as if there were a lot of strange characters roaming the dark forest around the mysterious Bluegate laboratory. But soon I knew what they were up to inside that shady facility and I knew where all those odd characters were coming from and I was enthralled and immersed in the world of interdimensional incursions and teleportation experiments that was sucking people from the past and the future to collide in cataclysmic present-day events (to paraphrase the author).

And oh, of course, the ghosts and the guns!

One of my favorite characters was Amee, a trans-human Martian, partly because of her clever dialogue—the overly logical yet ingenious way her “mind” worked. Although you may prefer the pony-tailed cowgirl teen from the 1800’s.

And my favorite costume was the battle dress worn by the Queen of the Visigoths, it fired anti-matter beams, the upper button was for invisibility, the second was a shield. It was a one of a kind item, gifted to the Queen by one of her scientists. Wow, Kevin, make me one of those!

One of my favorite scenes was the fantastic finale! But don’t peek ahead.

Despite all the seemingly disparate items I’ve brought up here, the plot is straightforward and easy to follow. This is an excellent story. Kevin Candela is a genius and he delighted me with every paragraph, with his characterizations, the dialogue, the ideas he wove together from science, myth, and popular culture—and, oh! – his creations.

I went back and forth between reading the eBook and listening to the audio and doing both at once—Kevin’s story is strong as it stands, the audio shines by itself, and the two melded together are bliss!

Entertaining

This one is a seriously fun book with great narration. Action, humor, time travel, and women who can kick a$$ and take names! I enjoyed it from start to finish and I am definitely looking forward to a second book with the same ladies. Enjoy!

Not what I expected

This is certainly not the type of paranormal story I thought it would be. The story was okay and the narrator did a great job but the story itself was not entertaining for me.
