About this listen
A riveting drama of marital therapy.
Gretchen and Steve have been married for a long time. Living in San Francisco, recently separated, with two children and demanding jobs, they’ve started going to a marriage counselor. Unfolding over the course of 10 months and taking place entirely in the marriage counselor’s office, John Jay Osborn’s Listen to the Marriage is the story of a fractured couple in a moment of crisis, and of the person who tries to get them to see each other again.
A searing look at the obstacles we put in our own way, as well as the forces that drive us apart (and those that bring us together), Listen to the Marriage is a poignant exploration of marriage - heartbreaking and tender.

In this intimate, beautifully crafted collection, Driver writes and narrates with disarming charm and candor about her bohemian upbringing between England and Barbados; her post-university travails and triumphs—from being the only student in her acting school not taken on by an agent to being discovered at a rave in a muddy field in the English countryside; shooting to fame in one of the most influential films of the 1990s and being nominated for an Academy Award; and finding the true light of her life, her son.

Story
Haelewise has always lived under the shadow of her mother, Hedda—a woman who will do anything to keep her daughter protected. For with her strange black eyes and even stranger fainting spells, Haelewise is shunned by her village, and her only solace lies in the stories her mother tells of child-stealing witches, of princes in wolf-skins, of an ancient tower cloaked in mist, where women will find shelter if they are brave enough to seek it. Then, Hedda dies, and Haelewise is left unmoored.

In a sleepy seaside town in Maine, recently widowed Eveleth "Evvie" Drake rarely leaves her large, painfully empty house nearly a year after her husband’s death in a car crash. Everyone in town, even her best friend, Andy, thinks grief keeps her locked inside, and Evvie doesn’t correct them. Meanwhile, in New York City, Dean Tenney, former Major League pitcher and Andy’s childhood best friend, is wrestling with what miserable athletes living out their worst nightmares call the "yips": he can’t throw straight anymore, and, even worse, he can’t figure out why.

Editor's Pick
An emotional character study for voyeurs
"Gabra Zackman’s narration put me right in this session with Steven, Gretchen, and their marriage counselor, Sandy—so much so that it almost felt like eavesdropping on all of the intimate details of their lives. I’ve never encountered a story that made me feel so much like a fly on the wall. It’s a captivating exploration of love, marriage, and figuring out (and then holding onto) the most important things in your life."

WOW
this is some of the most incredible storycrafting i can recall, and the outsider's POV is one of my favorite techniques. plus, Zackman's narration and voicing were just the right level of identifiable without being overly theatrical. i zoomed through this in barely over a day, and have to force myself to wait and let the story settle before i listen again to look for the finer details. this definitely bears a reread/relisten.

great book to listen to you!
this is a great book to listen to you! I guess that's why it's called listen to our marriage. I don't think I can sit down and read this but listening to it wasn't bad because there's a lot of he-said she-said but the narrator does a great job!

A must listen!
When I came across this wonderful novel I was actually looking for a self help book on listening, my first thought was...It's a novel, I don't read novels? With struggles in my own marriage I was drawn for some reason to listen. I often forgot I was listening to a novel as there was so much to glean from this masterpiece. This novel is so well written, the perfect balance of thought interjection from the therapist. John Jay Osborn captured so many realities of married life. I was so sorry when it came to it's end.

Saccharine mind-reading
The writer has gone through a successful couple therapy which last many years in real life.
So he wrote this book about a similar but fictitious and much briefer experience. The green chair in the cover
represents the "abstract relationship entity", the third patient, the one we are trying to save (not our individual egos...ohhhh,so deep).
It's the typical story of a married couple with issues about trust, fidelity, intimacy, day to day decisions... Sad.
The therapist is a cool-cold woman who knows everything these two are thinking even before they do (of course...).
She acts detached, she's aggressive (local school I guess) but at the end she shows that she cares.
Somehow in the story there's a side kick about her car and her mom with not much development in the plot.
Everything that matters happens only inside the therapist room, suggesting that no matter what you did (or you are still doing) has no bearing on the couple's future, if they are willing to first break up with the past and start anew, all within those confines of the "green" room.
One more thing for the author. The supposedly Italian hot dark haired potential mistress chef has a French name in the book, not Italian...
I know it's all about the same for those in the US, but a little research would have fixed this cliche' part of the book.
And why would the therapist always need to emphasize that this chef was beautiful? To trigger a jealousy reaction in the wife? It's like kids writing.

Very interesting insights into counseling
This is very well written and well narrated to provide interesting insights into the counseling of a troubled marriage.
The therapist is a bit unconventional to say the least, but it certainly works. Enjoy!
