Acerca de esta escucha

For three women in postwar Germany, 1945 is a time of hope—lost and found—in this powerful novel by the bestselling author of The Woman on the Orient Express.

Just weeks after World War II ends, three women from different corners of the world arrive in Germany to run a Displaced Persons camp. They long to help rebuild shattered lives—including their own…

For Martha, going to Germany provides an opportunity to escape Brooklyn and a violent marriage. Arriving from England is orphaned Kitty. She hopes working at the camp will bring her closer to her parents, last seen before the war began. For Delphine, Paris has been a city of ghosts after her husband and son died in Dachau. Working at the camp is her chance to find meaning again by helping other victims of Hitler’s regime.

Charged with the care of more than two thousand camp residents, Martha, Delphine, and Kitty draw on each other’s strength to endure and to give hope when all seems lost. Among these strangers and survivors, they might find the love and closure they need to heal their hearts and leave their troubled pasts behind.

I’ve always been interested in WWII
Novels; this is perspective I have never read or even thought about before: the plight of all the displaced persons created by the war.
A well told story of the refugee camps created for the caring & repatriation of thousands of displaced persons.

A Different Look At WW II

I have finished listening to the audio book and really enjoyed it. I have not read anything about the refuges after World War II ended. The author made it seem like one was in the camp with them. This is a interesting, well written book and the narrator was great too.

Great book

well written with engaging characters set after the end of the war. I had never read about how the UN assisted all those displaced by war to once again find homes.

WWII History

Heart warming not too gushy. The people camp and camp life were presented as reminiscence from events that happened in the past with the ups and downs joys happiness and sadness of life

Great story and awesome presentation! Loved the authors not at the end. Definitely keeping my eye out for more from Lindsay Ashford!

Wonderful story

The book I had listened to before this was "This Scorched Earth" by William Gear, which dealt with post Civil War. Then I listened "A Feather On The Water" which deals with post WW2 in Europe and the problems with homeless refugees.

I found both interesting because they described how things were, something we did not learn in school back when they actually taught history.

I found this book interesting in how it told how 3 complete strangers came together from different backgrounds and reasons for volunteering to do this job.

YES, I would recommend this book

Interesting part of history

I would love to see this book taught in high schools. There is so much to discuss and think about. Highly recommend this book!

Extraordinary read

Narrator was excellent, story was intriguing and as absolutely devastating WWII was, it leaves the reader hopeful that there is good in the world.

This is an amazing historical fiction. Yes, the characters were fictional the story is real. The narrator of this audible book is one of the best I have ever heard.

This is the first historical fiction I’ve read about the DP camps after World War 2. I have to admit it’s often crossed my mind- what does one do when you no longer have a past or identity? How do you begin to construct a life based on choices of ‘why not?’
A Feather on the Water is the story of three women who would never have crossed paths had there not been a war. An American fleeing an abusive marriage named Martha, a French nurse whose husband and son were killed in Dachau named Delphine, and a Polish/Austrian refugee of the kinder transport to England- Katja now known as Kitty.
Together they worked almost two years in helping over 300,000 displaced refugees from Poland and Czechoslovakia.
The characters which interact with these ladies are so rich and possess so much depth i was able to picture them all and still wonder what happened to them as they all began new lives.
A very interesting view into the process to emigrate and the counties policies and quotas.
I am very interested to look into other works by this author…especially after reading this in 24 hours!
