Acerca de esta escucha

For fans of Station Eleven and Where the Crawdads Sing comes a hopeful, sweeping story of survival and resilience spanning one extraordinary woman’s lifetime as she navigates the uncertainty, brutality, and arresting beauty of a rapidly changing world.

Florida is slipping away. As devastating weather patterns and rising sea levels wreak gradual havoc on the state’s infrastructure, a powerful hurricane approaches a small town on the southeastern coast. Kirby Lowe, an electrical line worker, his pregnant wife, Frida, and their two sons, Flip and Lucas, prepare for the worst. When the boys go missing just before the hurricane hits, Kirby heads out into the high winds in search of his children. Left alone, Frida goes into premature labor and gives birth to an unusual child, Wanda, whom she names after the catastrophic storm that ushers her into a society closer to collapse than ever before.

As Florida continues to unravel, Wanda grows. Moving from childhood to adulthood, adapting not only to the changing landscape, but also to the people who stayed behind in a place abandoned by civilization, Wanda loses family, gains community, and ultimately, seeks adventure, love, and purpose in a place remade by nature.

Told in four parts—power, water, light, and time—The Light Pirate mirrors the rhythms of the elements and the sometimes quick, sometimes slow dissolution of the world as we know it. It is a meditation on the changes we would rather not see, the future we would rather not greet, and a call back to the beauty and violence of an untamable wilderness.

Eerie rendition of our future world

how this author writes with such a degree of poignant and devastating reality is a wonderment. these characters will stay in my heart and float around in my head for a long time after I finished the book.

The story took my breath.

I so enjoyed this book. I read it in one day I could not put it down. It reminds me of another book. I read many years ago called the Road.

A page turner here!

This is a beautiful book. So believable while stretching the imagination. Sad and scary and hopeful and magical all at the same time.

I love this book!

A very sad, but increasingly hopeful look at climate change. This book follows a young lady's story from birth to death. Wanda, who was born during a hurricane marks the beginning of how humans evolve to become part of a new world, where civilization is going back to the wild, particularly in the landscape of Florida. Wanda loses everyone and everything, but then gains back a new life and new way.

Staggeringly bittersweet

Good story, good character development and very prophetic for Americas future - a warning to us all.

Great read

This could be read either as a warning or an epiphany. I think there’s little doubt at least part of our future will be unfolding as depicted here, and honestly, that caused a little anxiety. I don’t feel ready! But we are lead also to believe in our collective future, that for at least this little slice of humanity, good will ultimately prevail.

The imagery is lovely, the pace moves along - was definitely never bored, there’s gentle suspense. Really thought and emotion provoking, very much enjoyed.

Water, Power, Light, Time

I couldn’t stop listening once I got started. The story tells of the effects of our changing climate in a very human way. It was thoughtfully written and is able to credibly include a bit of supernatural wonder. Excellent book.

One of the best books I’ve read this year!

I don’t understand where the great reviews are coming from. It’s slow and sad and the author doesn’t do much with some aspects of the story that have great potential. Skip it.

Dull slog. Not my cup of tea

i for the most part enjoyed the story. It start was a little bit of a shock but not unrealistic. i would like to have know the years but also understand that the years didnt matter the descriptions of people was a great indicator of passing time.
