About this listen
On the fabled world of Krynn, Lord Soth finally learns that there is a price to pay for his long history of evil deeds, a price even an undead warrior might find horrifying. Dark powers transport Soth to Barovia, and there the death knight must face the dread minions of Count Strahn Von Zarovich, the vampire lord of the nightmare land. But with only a captive Vistani woman and an untrustworthy ghost for allies, Lord Soth soon discovers that he may have to join forces with the powerful vampire if he is ever to escape the realm of terror. Knight of the Black Rose is the second in an open-ended series of Gothic horror tales dealing with the masters and monsters of the Ravenloft dark fantasy setting.

Story
Some of the parchment pages were the color of cream, thick and substantial, made to last many, many lifetimes. Other pages were thin and desiccated, positively yellow from age, and crackled alarmingly as Van Richten turned them over. There were no ornate illuminations, no fussy borders, only lines of plain text in hard black ink. The flowing handwriting was a bit difficult to follow at first; the writer's style of calligraphy had not been in common use for 300 years. No table of contents, but from the dates it looked to be some kind of history.

Story
The Knights of Solamnia were the greatest order of chivalry in the history of Krynn. All those who wish to become Solamnic Knights must first enter as squires of the Knights of the Crown, with whom they begin their training in the virtue of loyalty. This is the story of Sir Pirvan the Wayward, whose reluctant and inauspicious beginnings as Pirvan the Spell Thief bore few clues to his potential as a Knight of the Crown.

Lifelong friends, they went their separate ways. Now they are together again, though each holds secrets from the others in his heart. They speak of a world shadowed with rumors of war. They speak of tales of strange monsters, creatures of myth, creatures of legend. They do not speak of their secrets. Not then. Not until a chance encounter with a beautiful, sorrowful woman, who bears a magical crystal staff, draws the companions deeper into the shadows, forever changing their lives and shaping the fate of the world.

The answer lies in the new Dragonlance novella by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman, which gazes into the future of Caramon and his mage-son, and into the dark nether-past of Raistlin. Tales of sea monsters, dark elves, ice bears, hideous hydra-headed serpents, and loathsome draconian troops.
Further adventures of the kender Tas; the innkeepr Otic and young Tika; the dwarf Flint and Tanis, leader of the companions; Caramon and Raistlin, twin brothers, one, a genial warrior, the other, a sickly magician and scholar.

You define life or it defines you. In Shawn Speakman’s case, it was both. Lacking health insurance and diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2011, Shawn quickly accrued a massive medical debt that he did not have the ability to pay. That’s when New York Times best-selling author Terry Brooks offered to donate a short story that Shawn could sell to help alleviate those bills—and suggested he ask the same of his other writer friends. Unfettered is the result: An anthology built in order to relieve that debt, featuring short stories by some of the best fantasy writers in the genre.

No table of contents, but from the dates it looked to be some kind of history.

just a good story
even if you don't know the Dragon Lance series this spin off of Lord Soth entering this vampire ruled relm through a magical mist that lord Soth paid to mind to cause he was about to catch the woman of his dreams and then suddenly things get better/worse different

Hit and Miss
I personally love the Ravenloft setting, but this story had a few grating issues that made me not enjoy the story. First of all are the characters, Soth was a crotchety old bastard most of the time which really made him seem like a npc in a video game. This goes for most of the characters in the Knight of the Black Rose, they all seem like cardboard cutouts of real people in a way. Except of course for Strahd who is more interesting and animated than all of the cast combined. It was a strain to listen to the antiheroes backstory, the only memorable parts of the book were the parts with Strahd which I enjoyed very much.
I liked the expansions out of Barovia into the lands of dread, read the I Strahd books if you want to see more of them. I read through half the sequel book and so far it features no Strahd or Barovia so I wouldn't recommend it. So for that I gave it a Three out of Five.

Gothic horror mixed with high fantasy
I can tell I will listen to this again later. This is such a fun creepy story with villains I already know from dungeons and dragons. I can't believe I got it on sale!

Great narration
Great narration, awesome characters and a worthy picturing of the dread of Barovia this time from a perspective as cruel as Strahd's.
