Publisher's summary

Some of the parchment pages were the color of cream, thick and substantial, made to last many, many lifetimes. Other pages were thin and desiccated, positively yellow from age, and crackled alarmingly as Van Richten turned them over. There were no ornate illuminations, no fussy borders, only lines of plain text in hard black ink. The flowing handwriting was a bit difficult to follow at first; the writer's style of calligraphy had not been in common use for 300 years. No table of contents, but from the dates it looked to be some kind of history. He turned to the first page and read:

I, Strahd, Lord of Barovia, well aware certain events of my reign have been desperately misunderstood by those who are better at garbling history than recording it, hereby set down an exact record of those events, that the truth may at last be known....

He caught his breath. By all the good gods, a personal journal?

Ravenloft and to the point

If you're here for just a vampire story, I cannot say this is more than 3-4 stars. If you're here because you already know something of Barovia, Ravenloft, or Strahd, this is an excellent 5 star story. It is a bit short, which is good and bad. It gets to the point, and keep the iconic events coming, but I was a bit sad when it was over.

As a primer for role-playing Strahd I have found this invaluable. Full disclosure, I hated the voice-acting when I just listened to the sample audio. By the end of the book, I had been utterly charmed by it. There is an unnatural cadence in his delivery, which seemed arbitrary at first, but eventually becomes a strangely fitting delivery from Strahd himself, an age-old vampire. When voicing other characters, this tendency melts away, and they have their own vocal rhythm. By the end it really made me feel I was in Strahd's point of view, even if that means he isn't a very reliable narrator, and might be stretching the truth in places.

If you plan to DM curse of strahd, or play and don't mind spoilers of the history, this is exactly the primer I hoped for.

A Telling Backstory If Ever There Was One

Read this after having read the original Ravenloft boxed set for D&D. This book goes a long way in setting up who Strahd was and why he became who he is. Solidly paced and with bursts of action, it's an enjoyable read -- or listen -- whether you play the RPG or not.

Wow

Wow... can't wait to DM "The Curse of Strahd" now. I listened to this book to gain a better understanding of Strahd's backstory and his land. I only hope that he is portrayed as well in my game.

Great Performance

Great performance of a surprisingly good book. The gamebook write ups of Strahd didn't do it justice.

Great for Strahd Background

This is a great book if you are looking for some strahd backstory, adds to his character to help you develop it in D&D games but not an amazing stand alone story. Also the narrator speaks in a way that just makes it all blur together in my mind and I can’t focus. Might just be me. Audible 20 review sweepstakes entry.

a nice glimpse into Strahd

was hungering for some D&D lore and was interested in Strahd and must say this was a fun listen, this will definitely help me if I ever run a game in Barovia

Dungeon Master's material for a villain.

The overall story of a love lost seemed a little clichéd. A more detailed look into D&D's more infamous villain, the book is great for the detail to role-play as him.

Gave me some wonderful backstory for a D&D campaign

A friend recommended this book during a discussion about Strahd’s mindset in Ravenloft. The story was engaging and well written. Definitely worth the time investment to read or listen to.

good until

the last chapter then for some reason it gets pedophelic. I really feel like the last chapter was absolutely pointless and ruins the book for me.
