About this listen

Raised and trained in seclusion at a secret fortress on the edge of the northern wilds of the Kingdom of Ashai, a young warrior called Rezkin is unexpectedly thrust into the outworld when a terrible battle destroys all that he knows. With no understanding of his life’s purpose and armed with masterful weapons mysteriously bestowed upon him by a dead king, Rezkin must travel across Ashai to find the one man who may hold the clues to his very existence.

Determined to adhere to his last orders, Rezkin extends his protection to an unlikely assortment of individuals he meets along the way, often leading to humorous and poignant incidents.

As if pursuing an elite warrior across a kingdom, figuring out who he is and why everyone he knows is dead, and attempting to find these so-called friends and protect them is not enough, strange things are happening in the kingdom. New dangers begin to arise that threaten not only Rezkin and his friends, but possibly everyone in Ashai.

This is the first installment of an ongoing series. This book is intended for adult readers. It contains graphic violence, creative language, and sexual innuendo. This book does not contain explicit sexual content.

Excellent story of an overpowering character

Simply put the main character is fantastic. I require book 2 so I can carry forth and see what he becomes.

A Great Experience.

First it must be stated that the narrator is absolutely amazing and performs above and beyond.

It's a fascinating story, about a boy severely lacking in social awareness, but sculptured into the most deadly person in the world, trying to find the purpose behind the last orders that were given to him by his masters.

The ridiculous level of skill of the protagonist can get a little jarring, and sometimes it reads like it's about to turn into a young adult romance novel, the way every God damn woman almost sploosh themselves at the sight of him. I mean I almost wish it would just go full erotica then. However much of the humor comes from him being completely oblivious to these advances, and being half a breath from killing people because he thinks (having known no kindness or affection) that they must be mounting some surprise attack.

My favorite

I have listened several times, love both books completed so far in the series. Some have complained about Rez always being so skilled, but I love the uprightness, loyalty, vast learning, kick ass fighting abilities, his majestic bearing and the crazy predicaments his lack of outer world knowledge gets him into. For me this is more then a story its a living parable of growing love and responsibility working itself out in the life of one extremely disciplined hero. The tension between naivety and rules, ruthless cold killer and morel purpose strike a beautiful balance I have not found its equal. Add Nick Podehls performance to it all and I have to encourage any fan of fantasy heros to get this series.

Incredibly written well thought out and well developed story.

Great read

Really enjoy the character development in this book. Can't wait for more! Rez is such an honest soul, trying to understand the strange new world as he tries to discover his purpose in life.
