About this listen

Croy Esca is a fixer at Torus Intercession, paid to guard, advocate for, and help those in need of the services his boss, Jared Colter, provides. Professionally, Croy goes in, gets the job done, and doesn't allow for anything that might resemble interest - which mirrors the way he handles his personal life as well.

When Croy is assigned to act as bodyguard to a billionaire during a long weekend trip to Las Vegas, he expects another in and out job made all the more tedious by the company he'll be keeping, and his loathing of Sin City. What he ends up with, however, is far more than he bargained for.

FBI Special Agent Dallas Bauer is good at what he does; some might even say he's consumed by his work, to the point of insomnia and at the cost to anything resembling a full life. Then Croy Esca comes crashing into his life, and it doesn't take long before he's struck by how desperate he is to make sure the fixer doesn't become the one that got away.

When Croy's assignment evolves into something so much more dangerous and complicated than he could have ever predicted, and his and Dallas's lives collide, the fixer finds himself in a fix. One Croy is not altogether sure he wants to escape.

Give this story a chance

Mary Calmes writes 99% of the time from the bottoms POV. So it blindsided me when Croy was the top but you don’t find out until chapter 3 so I was so confused at the very beginning. His actions make much more sense if you know from the start he’s the Alpha instead. Second the voice actor takes a bit to get comfortable. Give him until chapter 2 and he really gets comfortable and it becomes a pleasure to listen to. Even though the first chapter was annoying in the dictation. Give the story a chance and it’s just as wonderful as all her books are.

I couldn't finish this book!

I really wanted to like this book because I've enjoyed so many of Mary Calmes books in the past but I found this book very confusing and the narration very irritating. sorry John Solo, I've heard you perform a lot better.

More cross over potential

I love this series and I love how its starting to tie into Sam Kage's Marshall's as well!!! I fell in love with the over thinking main character immediately. The narration brings this book to the next level and I could not stop listening now I'm just sad I have to wait for the next book!!

Good story. Good narration.

I adore Mary Calmes characters. However improbable the story, it is always entertaining, and the characters are lovable.

I really liked Croy. I empathized with his tendency to over think things. We catch glimpses of characters from other series by Calmes, and I really hope we get to see Croy again.

John Solo is one of my favorite narrators, and he did a great job with this book.

enjoyed it

📖 Story comment: good pace, likeable characters, entertaining story.
I'm enjoying the concept behind a company of "fixers" and will explore the rest of the series. I enjoyed In a Fix, Croy was an interesting character and I liked the chemistry between him and Dallas.

🎧 Narrator comment: I have my moments with John Solo as a narrator. He generally has enough variation in his characters for them to each have there own voice, he has good timing and inflections and brings life to the story, he just has this way of occasionally Narrating flat and monotone and... Each. Word. Is. Performed. As. It's. Own. Sentence. Sometimes it works really well with the type of book he's narrating, unfortunately when it happened during this one it knocked me out of the story which was disappointing. - But not enough that I wouldn't not listen to it again.

Give This Story A Chance

While the beginning off this book was a bit hard to follow because of the many characters that were introduced, it does get better as it goes along. Especially after the main character’s love interest becomes more prominent in the story. I actually liked the narration after I slowed it down a bit, and felt that it suited the fussy nature of the main character. And I found no fault in the narrative voices of the other characters in the story.

What Happens in Vegas!

This one sort of makes me want to sing "it's a small world after all" and I love it when a plan comes together.
Croy with Dallas was sex on a stick. I'm in love with these guys.

Great Narrator. A Good Quick HEA hit.

I came across this work by way of following John Solo. Early on in my audiobook listening, Solo was a narrator that made me not want, but NEED to listen to a book! He did not disappoint in this story. Although I was a bit unsettled... anxious... on if this would reach a HEA, I was able to get to the end bc of Solo. This was short to me, so the pacing felt rushed, however, I'm still interested in seeing what the next book in the series will bring. BRB.

If only he could act

My biggest problem with this is that the performance lacks clarity and seems like he doesn’t really understand the subtext.

(—Spoilers sorta but not for the main story —)

Ex: one of the characters received news about his family and the character said he was mostly not upset, his actual action and his demands indicate the existence of a bit of a snide tone rather than the completely robotic delivery that was given in the performance. Saying “I don’t care,” does not equal robotic. And the characters saying he liked the idea of “him searching for the spoons” doesn’t say disregard either. That’s a snide remark or maybe even spiteful.
