Publisher's summary

Possession is nine-tenths of the law.

Spencer Bailey has spent his entire life under government oversight for something he can’t change: his magic’s affinity for breaking souls. After surviving the end of the world, Spencer joins the Supernatural Operations Agency with the intention of keeping his head down and his hands clean.

Tasked with tracking down a stolen artifact, Spencer wants to run his first case with the SOA by the book. The master vampire of the Seattle Night Court won’t make that easy. Takoma is demanding and possessive, used to getting what he wants, and he lures Spencer into his Night Court with the seductive promise of freedom.

In the Pacific Northwest, ghosts are crawling out of the woodwork, demons are on the rise, and Spencer can’t afford to make a mistake. Torn between the life he should lead and the one Takoma is offering, Spencer has to make a choice that won’t break his soul, but it might just shatter his heart.

It had to be demons!

I’m glad Spencer finally got his story (even if this book feels like the beginning of a spinoff series rather than a standalone). The Soulbreaker gets his chance to shine as he kicks off a new job as an SOA agent with a murky case in Seattle, coming face to fang once again with master vampire Tacoma. Their characters are well matched and the chemistry between them is explosive. I loved how Fatima’s personality developed with the superiority and affection only a feline is capable of. Other familiar faces make cameos here, with a particular shoutout for Wade. Gary Furlong returns for another on point narration of the story. I truly hope this isn’t the last trip back to this world and these characters.

welcome back to the Soulbound Universe!

“Welcome to the Supernatural Operations Agency, Special Agent Spencer Bailey.”

…and welcome back to the Soulbound Universe!

In this installment we join Spencer Bailey on the west coast, Seattle. He begins working his first case with the SOA but soon finds himself face to face with a familiar Night Court Vampire, Takoma, whom he battled along side at the end of the world.

Spencer has a type, which we previously learned and that is vampires so it’s no shocker that he has a large attraction to Takoma, instantly. The attraction began prior to his move to Seattle. Takoma makes his intentions clear from the beginning with his return attraction to Spencer. It’s a very clear stance from both our leading male leads of who they want, just not how they can make it happen. Takoma has an easier way of it since he is the leader of the Night Court and can usually get his way. Spencer, on the other hand, has been ran by the government since his soul breaking magic made its self known as a little child. His rare magic leaves him an outsider to many, besides the special few who take him in

Fatima is amazing and I want one. She’s the best girl and I would take an entire book of just her sassing people. She’s attached herself to Spencer as his psychopomp. She acts his connection through the veil as well as pulling souls and demons back through the veil as needed. She’s a sassy Ocelot who owns Spencer and puts him in his place as needed, but also is his most loyal companion. Spencer had a lack of those over his life with his family giving him up so young. He had Patrick and Nadia (from the previous Soulbound series and are seen very limited in this one), but Fatima is his girl.

The writing and story telling is outstanding as usual for a Hailey Turner novel. You got the normal twist and turns with the romance and quirky jokes. The amazing male leads with their comic relief side characters to break the seriousness of any scene. I always get the range of emotions when reading Ms. Turner’s books, from laughing to rolling my eyes to crying to what the-. It’s always a ride and this was no different.

Overall, another solid 5-star read for me.

I loved everything

I didn't realize that this was kind of a continuation of a series, which I haven't read. there were a few things that were referenced from those books that I was confused about but it was pretty easy to read as a standalone with context clues. The story was absolutely amazing, and I loved how the characters developed throughout the story. I really hope there is a continuation of the story, I would definitely listen to more books with Spencer as the main character.

Now I'm going to have to go back and listen to all the other soulbound novels, this author is fantastic and you should definitely read this book!

Another great story in the Soulbound Universe

I love the entire Soulbound series and this story delivers just the same. I was so excited for this to release and was afraid I could be psyching myself up for disappointment. But it was definitely not disappointing! I loved Spencer in the original series and I'm so glad to see him get his own storyline. I hope his story will continue and will have more adventures. And I hope one day to have some Wade stories. Also, Gary Furlong does an amazing job once again of bringing these characters to life with his wonderful narration.

Paranormal romance excellence

I loved every word of this book. Every gasp, every stare, every interaction, every fight, every kiss, every surprise.

Spencer caught my eye immediately in the Soulbound series because he was thirsty for Lucien. He was such an amazing addition to the gang even if he was not in every book. I was so happy when I knew he was going to get his own story and his own vampire seeing as he is very attracted to them and their lack of soul.

Spencer is called to Seattle to look for an artifact and he finds himself being pursued by a possessive vampire who makes his body happy, werecreatures, ghosts and demons. He would've been happy only with Takoma, master of the night court, but sadly he has a job to do and a lot of danger to face.

I loved the banter between Spencer and his psychopomp Fatima. She was so sassy and judged Spencer for his tastes in men, rolling her eyes so much. I love her and I love this duo!

Being back in the Soulbound universe made me so happy. All the details, the mentions of characters and events of the series, just filled me with joy, all the joy!! Hailey knows how to keep you glued to the pages and you can see the care she puts in the story and plot. You really never know where things will go and you get punched with twists and feels. It's excellent and I loved every second of it.

I wouldn't be opposed to infinite Soulbound books!

It's good to be back

Audio: 5⭐️

From Spencer’s first appearance, I found him an interesting character—with the snarkiness and skill to match Patrick and a nuanced, intriguing form of necromantic magic, I was so happy when his story was announced. In “Resurrection Reprise”, Spencer’s competence, tenuous standing with the government and danger kink are on full display. Bc ppl with magic dealing with the dead are typically killed as children even in the US, occasionally their lives are spared, but they are beholden to that government and monitored for life so long as they are useful.

Although instrumental in stopping Paris from being overrun by tens of thousands of zombies and defeating the Dominion Sect and the hells during the Battle of Samhain, to maintain their political standing, the government punishes Spencer by forcing him out of the international branch of magical governance and binds him to only traveling in the states. Now part of the SOA, his first assignment sends him to Seattle to find a powerful artifact capable of making demonic possession easier, putting him back on the radar of the master vampire, Takoma. Spencer is attracted to dangerous, domineering ppl and master vampires top that list. Having met Takoma during the Battle of Samhain, Spencer appreciated how Takoma protected his six while he was busy breaking souls, and from their first meeting in Seattle the attraction to the bossy vamp is immediate.

For Takoma, he was impressed by Spencer’s dedication to protecting everyone, humans and monsters alike and appreciated Spencer’s lack of fear and willingness to treat vampires with respect. Having Spencer in his territory and within reach makes him covet the man and his magic even more. Knowing how quickly the government can turn on ppl, Takoma is determined to seduce the man to his side and make sure Spencer knows he’ll be waiting for him when if the government comes for him. Turner does a good job making Takoma’s unyielding personality and Spencer’s desire to submit to him palpable.

As vampires in this universe have been mostly shown to be antagonistic, overly aggressive and cold, it’s nice to see how they operate from their perspective. Given that Takoma's been a vampire and leading his night court for over a millennia, being used to getting what he wants and master of his domain definitely fits his personality. However, Takoma’s tendency to choke Spencer into obedience even before they are anything to one another didn’t get me hard like it did Spencer so at times his behavior rubbed me the wrong way. Yet, Turner conveys how into the dynamic the MCs are and how perfectly they fit very well.

Though one aspect of how the antagonists would get the upper hand was surprisingly signposted with repetitions, overall, I enjoyed the case and found the animus and lengths that the baddies would go to for revenge ridiculous, but in the sense that ppl’s feelings of entitlement and warped belief in their own rightness and justification of their actions so wild but unfortunately believable. Having Spencer end up in the same position as Patrick (hiding his involvement with a supernatural creature from the SOA) after he proclaimed he wouldn't be like Patrick was hilarious. It was also fun to get cameos from the Soulbound gang, and I loved seeing Wade so confident and comfortable in his skin.

Gary Furlong has always been amazing in this series, and he brought his A game back again. It’s not just his character voices that always seem so spot on, it’s his inflections, comedic timing and how he infuses even pauses with the perfect emotional weight. I’ve loved every one of his performances I’ve listened to and this is no exception. I think I even liked the book a bit more for experiencing it this way my third time around. Though a complete story, there are hints that another adventure for Takoma and Spencer could happen, and I would happily devour that too, especially with Furlong in my ears.

A great Addition to the Soulbound Series!

I loved this spin off/addition to Hailey Turner’s Soulbound Universe series. This novel focuses on Spencer Bailey; it was so much fun getting into his headspace, and it was fascinating learning about his powers and capabilities. Hailey Turner did a great job embodying Spencer and his love interest, Tacoma, a master vampire for the Seattle Nightcourt. I enjoyed the relationship between Tacoma and Spencer, even though Tacoma was a bit too possessive and their relationship felt a bit too physical and steamy at times.

Narrator, Gary Furlong, did a great job portraying Spencer, and he did a great job embodying all of the characters! He always does a great job narrating Hailey Turner's characters!

I loved the case Spencer is attempting to figure out! Hailey Turner’s world building is always fantastic! I’m so glad the Soulbound Universe series got a spin off. It’s exactly what I needed!
