Winner of the 2023 Audie Award for Thriller/Suspense

This “gloriously tangled game of cat and mouse” (Ruth Ware, #1 New York Times bestselling author) explores the anxieties of impending motherhood, unreliable friendship, and the high price of keeping secrets. Perfect for fans of the thrillers by Paula Hawkins and Robyn Harding.

In this “outstanding debut thriller” (Booklist, starred review), Helen’s idyllic life—handsome architect husband, gorgeous Victorian house, and cherished baby on the way—begins to change the day she attends her first prenatal class.

There, she meets Rachel, an unpredictable single mother-to-be who doesn’t seem very maternal: she smokes, drinks, and professes little interest in parenthood. Still, Helen is drawn to her. Maybe Rachel just needs a friend. And to be honest, Helen’s a bit lonely herself. At least Rachel is fun to be with. She makes Helen laugh, invites her confidences, and distracts her from her fears.

But her increasingly erratic behavior is unsettling. And Helen’s not the only one who’s noticed. Her friends and family begin to suspect that her strange new friend may be linked to their shared history in unexpected ways. When Rachel threatens to expose a past crime that could destroy all of their lives, it becomes clear that there are more than a few secrets laying beneath the broad-leaved trees and warm lamplight of Greenwich Park.

Absolutely loved

The characters were great, the narration brought them to life. Such a great story that was fast paced and kept my interest the whole way through. takes off in chapter 3.

Bravo. Encore.

A tad slow but man did this book recover quickly. The betrayal. The deceit. The scandal. Bravo.

Boring and Confusing

I typically don't mind a multi POV storytelling, but with this book I found it boring and confusing. I guessed who done it very early on. Not my favorite.

Not What I Had Hoped

I was so excited for this book, the cover is great and its my favorite genre - a British mystery/thriller. Unfortunately I was disappointed. While the narration was very good, I found the main character's whinging to be unbearable after awhile. She also seems unbelievably naive over situation after situation. Nobody, especially a woman, could have that little intuition. About half way through I knew what was going on but had to keep listening to get the details, which didn't end up being very satisfying anyway. Overall, its not bad writing but the characters were a bit hallow and mostly unlikable.

slow start

Even though this storyline starts out slow, it gradually lures you in. Intriguing keeps you guessing! The ending, you never see it coming.

It was good - not great.

No regrets listening, I love a British story line and accents! And while I didn’t have it “figured out” so to speak, it was all too much! Too many subplots! That being said, I look forward to more by this author bc she honestly did keep me listening…

The story

Well written great story. The end is good too. Characters, plot, performance. Kept me in semi-darkness almost the whole time

I really liked the ending, but...

What I didn't like was that one of the main characters always seemed to be on the border of spineless and clueless, and must have mentioned that she was tired at least 50 times. That always makes me wonder if the author is exhausted .
Also, I don't enjoy books or even too many sections of a book where someone is in some sort or confused haze. Again, how tired is this author??
It's a decent story though, and it definitely comes to life at the end, but overall, I didn't love it.
