'The two foes of human happiness are pain and boredom.' Arthur Schopenhauer (1788-1860) was one of the most influential philosophers of the 19th century because his humanistic, atheistic, if pessimistic views chimed with a new secularism that was emerging from a Western society dominated by religion. Despite his rather forbidding image (and a few outdated views), he is one of the most approachable German philosophers, and this is certainly evident in these two key works, The Wisdom of Life and Counsels and Maxims.

A masterpiece of satire, this classic has entertained and enlightened readers the world over with its sly and ironic portrayal of human life from the vantage point of Screwtape, a highly placed assistant to "Our Father Below". At once wildly comic, deadly serious, and strikingly original, C. S. Lewis gives us the correspondence of the worldly-wise old devil to his nephew Wormwood, a novice demon in charge of securing the damnation of an ordinary young man. The Screwtape Letters is the most engaging and humorous account of temptation - and triumph over it - ever written.

Story
Acclaimed historian and best-selling author Paul Johnson’s books have been translated into dozens of languages. In Socrates: A Man for Our Times, Johnson draws from little-known resources to construct a fascinating account of one of history’s greatest thinkers. Socrates transcended class limitations in Athens during the fifth century B.C. to develop ideas that still shape the way we think about the human body and soul, including the workings of the human mind.

Story
Gaius Musonius Rufus was a Roman Stoic philosopher of the first century AD. He has been referred to as the Roman Socrates and is also remembered for being the teacher of Epictetus. He taught philosophy in Rome during the reign of Nero and so was sent into exile in 65 AD, returning to Rome only under Galba. Twenty-one of his lectures survive together with a few fragmentary notes from others, all of which are contained in this narration.

Story
Edward Bulwer-Lytton's book is ostensibly a work of Science Fiction. It deals with an underground race of advanced beings, masters of Vril energy - a strange power that can both heal and destroy - who intend to leave their subterranean existence and conquer the world. But the book has been seen by many as a barely concealed account of Hidden Wisdom, a theory that has attracted many strange bed-fellows, including the French author Louis Jacolliot, the Polish explorer Ferdinand Ossendowsky, and Adolf Hitler.

Story
This famous treatise began as a letter to a young French friend who asked Edmund Burke’s opinion on whether France’s new ruling class would succeed in creating a better order. Doubtless the friend expected a favorable reply, but Burke was suspicious of certain tendencies of the Revolution from the start and perceived that the revolutionaries were actually subverting the true "social order". Blending history with principle and graceful imagery with profound practical maxims, this book is one of the most influential political treatises in the history of the world.

lots of words, but could be better
Would've been better if she spelled out the words and gave examples for each word. should also have given better examples with the words that she did give examples for.

Good way to passively study
I appreciate that I can listen to this on the way to and from work, but the narrator pronounces things incorrectly SO FREQUENTLY and it sort of drives me insane. You can still understand what word she is referring to so it’s not that big of a deal, it’s just driving me a little insane. Overall very helpful!

The mispronounced words abound
I found myself deciphering the correct word from the definition as MANY words are not pronounced correctly. Words that end in D are pronounced with a hard "t" sound. The emphasis on syllables is "off" on words as well.
After the 3rd chapter I focused on how often the words were not said correctly versus new vocabulary.
There should have been more emphasis on pronouncing words using the widely used/accepted and alternatively as it is in the book.

List of Words ONLY- SO MANY MISPRONOUNCED
There is nothing ground breaking or helpful about this "book" as it would be just as easy and FREE to look up a definition list for most used vocabulary words on the GRE. The entirety of this "book" is only a long list of words, seemingly recited by someone in a very echoey room, and she mispronounces so many of them Ia questioning the definitions of words I have not heard. I thought there would be some sort of exercises as part of this but I waa wrong. Unless you REALLY need to listen to words I would find another study tool.
