About this listen

"I bought the milk," said my father. "I walked out of the corner shop, and heard a noise like this: T h u m m t h u m m. I looked up and saw a huge silver disc hovering in the air above Marshall Road."

"Hullo," I said to myself. "That's not something you see every day. And then something odd happened."

Find out just how odd things get in this hilarious story of time travel and breakfast cereal, expertly told by Newbery Medalist and best-selling author Neil Gaiman.

Critic reviews

“Did you know that Neil Gaiman can sound like a stegosaurus, a pirate, a volcano god, and even a bunch of green blobby aliens? Not only that, but he sounds like he's having an utter ball while he narrates, and it's impossible not to be swept up into the brilliant, batty fun.” ( AudioFile)
“…it’s hard not to love a novel that borrows equally from Calvin and Hobbes and The Usual Suspects. If you read only one book this year, a story with dancing dwarfs is always a wise choice.” ( Kirkus Reviews)
“Gaiman knocks it out of the park again with this imaginative story.” ( School Library Journal)

Perfect to read with your kid

While this may be better in print due to the lovely illustration, Neil Gaiman brings a delightful tale to life with his wonderful narration! A short quick read for you and your child, or just you if you’d like!

Cute- Tall Tale

Even as an adult I find these stories by Gaiman entertaining and fun! It was short, and fun, and it would be good for a road trip with the family.

Gaiman is story-telling comfort food

Gaiman does his best when he is talking. luckily for most of his books, he tells his own story. "The milk" has some great bedtime level creativity and fun logic he reuses in many of his other tales. Milk is sacred, pined for, is a sign of, and possibly world ending. What a fun trip into Gaiman's imagination once again.

A wonderful flight of fantasy!

I am so happy to find this little book! It gives the same feeling of hilarious absurdity that is also so appealing in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. I only wish I had been so creative with my explanations to my children when they were small and looking to me with their constant Why's and What's and When's. A great read for kids and adults!
