Publisher's summary

In this stunning follow-up to Hollow Kingdom, the animal kingdom's "favorite apocalyptic hero" is back with a renewed sense of hope for humanity, ready to take on a world ravaged by a viral pandemic (Helen Macdonald).

Once upon an apocalypse, there lived an obscenely handsome American crow named S.T....

When the world last checked in with its favorite Cheetos addict, the planet had been overrun by flesh-hungry beasts, and nature had started reclaiming her territory from humankind. S.T., the intrepid crow, alongside his bloodhound-bestie Dennis, had set about saving pets that had become trapped in their homes after humanity went the way of the dodo.

That is, dear reader, until S.T. stumbled upon something so rare - and so precious - that he vowed to do everything in his power to safeguard what could, quite literally, be humanity's last hope for survival. But in a wild world plagued by prejudiced animals, feather-raising environments, new threats so terrifying they make zombies look like baby bunnies, and a horrendous dearth of cheesy snacks, what's a crow to do?

Why, wing it on another bighearted, death-defying adventure, that's what! Joined by a fabulous new cast of animal characters, S.T. faces many new challenges plus his biggest one yet: parenthood.

Critic reviews

"Buxton balances the snarky humor and moving tenderness of her delightful protagonist with genuine tension. Fans of postapocalyptic dangers and witty narration will eat up this charming story." (Publishers Weekly)

Addictive

Hollow Kingdom was just the beginning fetal creatures has more development of original characters and the coming full circle of honoring aura. Graphic and heart strings with moments of hope lovely and dark perspectives. Loved all the characters and heaviness, D is not kept she is the connector, S.T. Revelations are profoundly releasing at the last intense moment.

Amazing

You'll laugh; you'll cry; you'll think. Very different than any other fantasy I've read/listened to. Note: Listen to the previous novel before this one to get the full back story. Buxton left plenty of plot room in this 2nd book to warrant a trilogy. I so hope that she does.

Dang book! I couldn’t put it down.

I didn’t know if the author could beat his first book in the series, hollow kingdom, but he did. It was one of those books where I thought about it when I wasn’t reading, which is a major accomplishment and kept me up at night. It was heartfelt, irreverent, and I often laughed out loud.

Not all sequels are this good

This is a fantastic sequel to the hollow kingdom. St is one of the greatest hero’s of any books you’ve ever heard or read.

A great addition

A great addition! The relationship between D and ST is warming and heartbreaking at times but worth the read.

Genius Level Writing

This author is one of the finest wordsmiths I have ever read, and that is saying a lot. her knowledge of animal life and plant life, her ability to infuse her work with incredible humor along with profound understanding of our world is like nothing I've ever read. I strongly suggest you get the first book in this series and then read them both. I have well over a thousand books in my audible file and these two books are among the best I've ever read.

Clever conceit continues

A lively told end-if-the-world tale that continues logically from the original book. Kept my attention, rather easily actually, even though there were so many many times I was rolling my eyes and shaking my head (while suppressing a minor laugh). The story itself was beyond absurd, HOWEVER, the Crow “ST” is such a fun, funny, and well conjured character that I found myself not completely minding — and again, often laughing — at this dystopian world’s animal solidarity tale as told by ST.
I confess I’m not a zombie fan, so if you are one maybe you’d really like this book series much more than me. Can’t say I’ll be recommending it to friends, yet I did enjoy it. Audio performance was flawless!

Dark humor with a loving heart

Laugh out loud funny while driving a message of love, loyalty and hope. It was a message to humanity.

Great sequel

loved the entire story from beginning to end. I never thought I'd like a crow so much but ST has a special spot in my heart. I hope the author writes a third book and soon.
