About this listen

When Bampton’s coroner, Hubert Shillside, does not return from a trip to Oxford, Master Hugh de Singleton is called. Concerned for his old friend, Hugh takes to the road to investigate.

Travel is safer than in times hence but, out of sight of prying eyes, it is still unwise to travel alone. Hugh finds a body, stabbed and left to rot, but it is not the body he was expecting to find.

Indeed, reports of pillage, attacks, and chaos on the roads out of Oxford suddenly seem rampant. Hugh must ascertain whether the incidents are random, or whether something darker is afoot.

The guilty cannot afford to be caught, but what lengths will they go to to cover their tracks, and will Hugh escape unscathed?

Series continues to be excellent

Mel Starr’s de Singleton series has helped me through the past eleven months of quarantine. The writing, the details, the characters, and the mysteries have kept me intrigued along with Tim Bruce’s terrific narration.

Extraordinary!

By far, the best book I’ve read in a very very long time. Wonderful read.

I now want muslin rolls and ale

Fun story. Especially liked the descriptions of meals and life in those times. Well written, and narrated with a very pleasing voice!

well researched historical

interesting and well researched historical details. The story is mostly used to lace together the research, but is somewhat entertaining even so. The characters all seem very naive.

One of the best in the series so far

I do so enjoy the small passages which describe medical treatments and/or surgical techniques in the 14th Century, many of which are actually being rediscovered and used today. Such irony . . .
I also really appreciate the rare paragraphs that provide glimpses into the nature and impact of Christian faith, Scripture, and theology (not to mention some silly Church-defined heresies) in England during that time period.
