Publisher's summary

Winner of the 2015 CWA Endeavour Dagger for Historical Fiction.

London, 1654. Oliver Cromwell is at the height of his power and has declared himself Lord Protector. Yet he has many enemies at home and abroad. London is a complex web of spies and merchants, priests and soldiers, exiles and assassins.

One of the web's most fearsome spiders is Damian Seeker, agent of the Lord Protector. No one knows where Seeker comes from, who his family is, or even his real name. All that is known of him for certain is that he is utterly loyal to Cromwell and that nothing can be long hidden from him. In the city, coffeehouses are springing up, fashionable places where men may meet to plot and gossip. Suddenly they are ringing with news of a murder.

John Winter, hero of Cromwell's all-powerful army, is dead, and lawyer Elias Ellingworth is found standing over the bleeding body, clutching a knife. Yet despite the damning evidence, Seeker is not convinced of Ellingworth's guilt. He will stop at nothing to bring the killer to justice - and Seeker knows better than any man where to search.

beginning of the Seeker books

I started with the snd book in the series on Kindke and followed with the rest. 1st time hearing the story rather than reading. Great performance and wonderful to trace back the beginnings of all the interrelationships in the later books!

Good story I like the voice of the narrator.

A bit convoluted but good entertainment
while driving. Miles flew by. Traffic jams, no problem

What a plot twist

First time reading or rather listening to this author. Great story with such a twist. I never thought the murderer would be that person. This is also the first time I have heard this narrator. He has a wonderful voice.

fascinating

don't usually get a historical novel about Cromwell and even less often about a supporter of Cromwell. this story is well done and the main character believable. I agree that the narration is a bit slow. setting it to just a tad faster works well

A history lesson in hate.

Drags a lot. I’m not familiar with the English civil war. If I was may not have dragged as much.

Worth staying with this book

At first the number of characters introduced was distracting and the Seeker was too cold to be sympathetic. I’m glad I stuck with the book. The complexity of the plot, the interwoven stories, the historical setting kept me listening long past my bedtime.

Difficult narration to follow along with

From what I could tell, the story line was good, but I found this narration extremely difficult to follow. The narrator read throughout the entirety of the book, as if there was a cliffhanger pending, and it was very hard to tell when he was switching characters or storylines. I would probably gravitate away from other books performed by the same narrator.

Decent

I liked the historical aspects of this book but for some reason could not get invested in the characters. Perhaps the Seeker character was too much of a mystery? It was a relatively quick listen though. Narration was pretty good. I do have the next two volumes in my library so hoping to enjoy them a bit more.
