About this listen

A LitRPG Fantasy novel.

Yokïmi Kikuchi dwelled in what she perceived to be harmony with her family. As with most nobles, she had the opportunities of the privileged. She spent her days split between loves: exploring music and the arts, and taking the first steps on the path of the Bellatir—martial artists focused on mastering graceful movement, balance, and deadly precision. It is a noble heritage of her ancestors, and she seeks to follow in those footsteps.

Her twin brother's madness changed everything. Twisted by his hate and magic beyond his control, he unleashes a violent cataclysm that destroys the family and the castle in which they lived. By chaotic chance, Yokïmi survived, but found herself forever changed.

Robbed of everything, she flees from the site of that disaster. Bearing the ill news to a friend of their family, the transformed woman grieves for what she has lost. But though she survived, terrible Curses have latched onto her. Their effects threaten to ruin her life forever, leaving her no choice but to contemplate Quests to see them removed.

Her family's wealth and power lie in tatters. All of her personal possessions are gone, and the Curses upon her limit her options severely, leaving her unable to enjoy the simple pleasure of walking freely among the people of her homeland. All Yokïmi has left are the gifts that have served her well during her life: her determination, ingenuity, and the body she has only begun sculpting into the weapon and magical conduit she'll need to meet these challenges.

The only problem is the challenges she didn't anticipate...and the love and friendships she would risk losing along the way.

Recommended, mostly

I read this one before I listened to it, and I’m glad I did. I really liked the story, but found the narration a bit lacking. I stopped about halfway through, took a break, then finished. If I hadn’t already read the book I don’t know if I would have finished the story.

Narrator did ok with voices, but felt a little slow. Also, the stat reading voice was a bit too shrill for my taste. Listen to the sample first

Poor Narration.

The narrator sound bored, and many times during the stat reading (which there is too much for my taste, but that's another matter) i swear they just use the sane exact clip of her saying a word. Sometime it even clips the end of another time its said. I understand it may just be my opinion but the narrator sounds more like shes giving a book report than reading a book.

The story itself is novel, and i liked the first chapter as it was very evocative but soon slows down fast as we get to our main character. I would not go so far as other reviewers and say i hate her, but she is certainly not as likeable or even memorable as she needs to be. The side characters and world-building are the definite highlights. Some of the fight scenes dragged.

a smut book with an invisible protagonist sounds really interesting.

this is the most frustrating book I have ever TRIED to listen to. 80% of the book is talking about how the main character is walking around completely naked where anybody can look at her but not see her, 10% is trying to make up a b*******he Sakai story with Japanese sounding names with made up feudal cast positions in a world that does not exist and we have nothing to base half of the positions other than brother and father on. 5% of that is character building using isekai rules. and the last 5% consists of really poorly thought out sex scenes that are limited only to lesbian relationships while talking about how she just doesn't like men in the middle of it. I got halfway through this and got so irritated with the book I called audible and demanded a refund.

Meh protagonist, bad narration.

This book is going into the folder I'll never finish. Nearly halfway through and I realized it's boring me to the point that I'm actually focusing on my job instead. At first I thought it was just the bad narrator but I actually hate the book too. The MC could die and I wouldn't care at all. Unfortunately, I apparently made it too far in for a refund.
