About this listen

Combine the surprising truth about brain food with the cutting-edge science of brain metabolism to achieve extraordinary emotional, cognitive, and physical health.

Are you struggling with attention problems, mood swings, food obsession, or depression? Whatever the issue, you have far more control over your thoughts, feelings, and behavior than you realize. Although medications may bring some relief, in Change Your Diet, Change Your Mind, Dr. Georgia Ede reveals that the most powerful way to change brain chemistry is with food, because that’s where brain chemicals come from in the first place.

In this provocative, illuminating guide, Dr. Ede explains why nearly everything we think we know about brain-healthy diets is wrong. We've been told the way to protect our brains is with superfoods, supplements, and plant-based diets rich in whole grains and legumes, but the science tells a different story: not only do these strategies often fail, but some can even work against us. The truth about brain food is that meat is not dangerous, vegan diets are not healthier, and antioxidants are not the answer.

Change Your Diet, Change Your Mind will empower you to:

  • understand how unscientific research methods drive fickle nutrition headlines and illogical dietary guidelines
  • weigh the risks and benefits of your favorite foods so you can make your own informed choices about what to eat
  • evaluate yourself for signs of insulin resistance—the silent metabolic disease that robs your brain of the energy it needs to thrive
  • improve your mental health with a choice of moderate-carbohydrate and ketogenic diets that you can personalize to your food preferences and health goals

Drawing on a wide range of scientific disciplines including biochemistry, neuroscience, and botany, Dr. Ede will ignite your curiosity about the fascinating world of food and its role in nourishing, protecting, and energizing your brain.

Excellent in depth analysis

I’ve read many books on nutrition, in the double digits. This is my second overall favorite, in terms of broad discussion, specific nutritional information and advice, implementability, new information presented, and insights offered by the very qualified and experienced author. If you need to heal your body and your brain, or are helping someone else to do so, get this book and follow it’s instructions. This book should be required reading in all high school health programs. It would revolutionize mental and physical health. Let this wash over you. Read it twice. Unbelievably helpful.

Excellent all around!

First, Dr. Ede clearly explains the cultural, political, and scientific reasons why research on nutrition has been wandering off in the wrong directions for close to a century.

Second, she writes the clearest and most reader-friendly descriptions of what's going on in our brains, all the neurons, the mitochondria, and their crucial sources of energy.

Third, Dr. Ede provides statistics, and cites sources and case histories, as meticulously as she would have for an article for a medical journal.

Fourth, the author is also our narrator, which usually makes me hesitate before buying a book. But Dr. Ede has a pleasant, well-modulated voice, and there was never a danger of mispronunciations.

Despite the controversial theory, that she explains so well, of a link between nutritional inadequacy and the current Western epidemic of mental health problems, Dr. Ede is not a quack or a faddist. I think anyone battling depression, anxiety, or any of the host of other mental illnesses should listen to this book.

Excellent listen--I've ordered the hardcover!

This book has shed a new light on everything I know about nutrition. Doctor Ede's narration style is bright, optimistic, hopeful, and inspiring as she informs her listeners about the best ways to eat--based upon how we evolved as a species. Her insightful arguments for how meat is the true, original superfood are built upon and supported by good science and research efforts through the centuries. How insulin resistance is the key culprit of our chronic disease and mental health epidemics all corroborate and makes complete, obvious sense across multiple disciplines. It's an indispensable treasure trove of nutritional and metabolic information that I'll keep referring back to in the hardcover version that I've ordered too--this should be made required reading for all psychiatrists in residency!

Everyone in developed world MUST read esp. parents

There was not much in this book that I did not already know, but there is something about the way it is presented here that made the penny drop a little differently than ever before. Similar general thesis to Brain Energy by Chris Palmer, but this one landed more effectively for me

Everyone in the developed world should read this book, Every parent and aspiring parent MUST read it.

Excellent strategies for avoiding and reversing the damage caused by highly processed food.

I liked the integration of paleo, low carb, and keto diet strategies, and the resources and sources cited are superb for following up and taking a deeper dive.

Never linked mental illness and nutrition together before this book.

Thank you Dr. Ede for showing me the connection between having a mental illness and the effect nutrition has on our brains. After dealing with depression, anxiety, panic disorder and other symptoms for over 30 years, not once did my doctor, therapist, psychiatrist ever mention that my diet may have something to do with it. This is valuable information that really makes a difference. I have been doing a ketogenic diet for a while now and all the above symptoms have been alleviated. I recommend this book for anyone who deals with mental illness. Thank you again Dr. Ede.

A New Hope for Mental Health

This book as well as Chris Palmer's "Brain Energy" will open new horizons to those who've hit the wall with the standard psychiatric treatments and those who want to acquaint themselves with the new, cutting edge metabolic approach on mental health.
It is a very promising theory and this book presents both the science and its application.
To me these concepts weren't new but Dr. Ede succeeded on organizing them in a concise and easy to digest manner.
Her narration is clear, smooth and playful, and you can feel the passion and care in her voice.
As an n=1 I can attest that this approach has produced breathtaking results for me and my experiences are similar to those in the case studies presented in this book.
If you, or a loved one is struggling with mental health issues or you are a mental health professional this book is a must read!
