Solid outing in a compelling world

Solid outing in a compelling, if somewhat derivative world. The narrator is excellent and many of the ideas fun enough. This book the third in the series is unfortunately not the best of the trilogy but provided an opportunity for some of the supporting characters to be fleshed out a bit more. All in all a fun listen.

Nooooo!

I just finished listening to Calling ... book 3 in the series. I am so sad this is over with. I can't believe it has come to an end. Molly, please start another series as brilliant engaging and fun as this was from start to finish. I will miss Sarah and all the girls so much.! And Amanda, there is no better narrator for this type of story! You ARE Sarah Smith. Thanks to both of you!

Love this series.

I love this author, so I thought I’d give it a go. This series exceeded all my expectations and I loved every minute. Sarah/Cassandra is a true heroine and it’s easy to forget her age. Bravo!

Not as good as the first book, re-uses themes from Half Moon Hollow

The first book in the series was excellent. It pushed the boundaries of Harper’s hero’s usual paths and allowed for world-building. The books that followed were not as good. There are many parallels to the half moon hollow books and some of the lines feel repeated from that series.

For example: sisters that bicker/are enemies coming to an uneasy truce. A heroine who doesn’t plan anything but lucks into everything. When they try to plan things they make mention of how past events were unplanned but now, hopefully with a plan things will be better (Jane gets mocked for this relentlessly in the half-moon hollow series). The idea of an evil
Librarian, the librarian in the half moon hollow series caused issues in book 1 and many references to librarians were made throughout the series.

The issue with parents. The discussion between Mary and Sarah about their mom never praising them is exactly what Jane and her sister say about their mom.

Gavin gives off very strong Gabriel vibes. And owen is like Dick with the jokes alluded to instead of said. Ivy and Alicia are like Andrea. The character parallels are very strong which takes away from the story. It would have been nice to see her break away from the plot outline, themes and character roles of her precious series.

The reliance on a book to solve issues is used in both series.

The guilds are a huge parallel to the Council in the half moon hollow series. An explanation of the guilds and world order feels copied almost word for word from the Council for the Equal treatment of the Undead’s explanation in the half moon hollow books.

The bond between characters that is so integral to the story feels rushed. It seems like Harper can’t decide if she wants her magic in the books to be spell based or based on feelings/emotion.

The narration in book 1 was better. Most of the tome Alicia talks it feels like a fake voice is being used. The first book was beautiful narration.

I feel this series could have been great but instead it feels like a re-make in a different world/timeline of Harper’s previous series. The narration started good but suffered in the later books. Ronconi is a great narrator but her changed voices for book 3 hurt the series.

Overall not a bad series. Of you haven’t read half moon hollow you will enjoy it more. If you have, then you know what to expect.

Cute series!

Overall, I enjoyed the whole series. This book was also good, but I thought too much time was taken to review details from previous books.

Good story despite a few minor inconsistencies

I didn’t notice it much my first time through this series, but there are a few inconsistencies in the lore laid out in previous books. Fortunately, they are relatively minor and do not affect the plot in a meaningful way. This was definitely a good (by which I mean well written, #NoSpoilers) resolution to the story begun in Changeling.
