Publisher's summary

Spurgeon's last 30 years, from the building of the Metropolitan Tabernacle to his death in 1892, saw long years of the full harvest of his youthful efforts. With a congregation of nearly 6,000 in the heart of London and a wider audience of perhaps a million to be addressed weekly through his printed sermon, Spurgeon not only sustained his productivity but even increased the quality of his work. But there is more to Spurgeon than the preacher: we see him also as author, as editor of a monthly magazine, as founder and director of his Pastors College, and organizer of two orphanages.

Throughout the autobiography, Spurgeon records those aspects of life that only an autobiography can: his family circle, the daily labor behind his public works, and the feelings which led him to resist the reformation of the Faith of the Churches. Above all, he records his experiences of God's grace.

Outstanding

Greatest autobiography I have read. Possibly the most important two book series ever. Definitely worth getting.

More than just an autobiography

Spurgeon's "autobiography" was compiled from letters, sermons, and other sources after his death. Portions of the book are written by its editors or Mrs. Spurgeon. I don't think that you'll be lost if you do not first read the volume one of this set, but I'm not sure why you would want to skip it.

This volume deals with the height of Spurgeon's ministry and many of its legendary aspects. There a very intriguing chapters on the Metropolitan Tabernacle, the Pastor's College, and his writing ministry. The only thing lacking, in my opinion, is perspective that only time can give the subject. I'm not sure that when this work was compiled that enough time had passed to adequately understand the items such as the Downgrade Controversy.

I wouldn't recommend the book to someone who is not somewhat familiar with Spurgeon and his ministry. It was not put together to introduce the subject to a reader.

A Wonderful Life

What an incredible life of opportunity and blessing Spurgeon experienced! His story is well crafted in narration by Robert Whitfield, whose other audio works are highly recommended.

Mr. Spurgeon is yet.... very much alive.

I am struck by the verse; The Spirit himself pleads with God for us in groans that words cannot express. Surely, such groans are required to communicate to the Glory of God, the necessity of thanksgivings for a life so well lived. I am "spur-ged" on, inspired and prayerful. Oh, that a fragment of such devotion and commitment be found in me. Christ in us all, the hope of glory. Read this book and it will seem to you that you are reclining upon the Master's breast.

The second half was pretty humdrum

The first part was pretty good, but it became pretty boring around the half way point. Kind of surprised I finished it.
