Publisher's summary

In this heart-pounding thriller, a correctional officer and an ex-cop are fleeing a hurricane - but their only hope of survival is a maximum-security prison where they face new untold dangers.

Hurricane Anna: A superstorm made up of two Category 5 hurricanes coming together to wreak unprecedented havoc along the Eastern Seaboard.

When the superstorm hits, the correctional officers at Ravenhill flee, opening all the cell doors and leaving the inmates to fend for themselves as the floodwaters rise. But Jack Constantine, an ex-cop serving 10 years for killing one of his wife's murderers, isn't going to just lay down and die. Not when his wife's two remaining killers are among the prisoners relocated to the Glasshouse to ride out the storm.

Meanwhile, Kiera Sawyer, a correctional officer on her first day at work, is the only officer left behind when the others flee. Sawyer rescues Jack and offers to team up. If they can make it to the Glasshouse, they might just survive the hurricane. But that involves making their way through the prison, fighting off 800 blood-crazed inmates as the building fills with water and the wall crumble all around them.

Critic reviews

"From page one, Breakout slams the cell door on the reader and refuses to release them. It's a refreshingly clever story that delights in taking out preconceptions of how a thriller should play out - and then not only ups the ante, but goes all in. Paul Herron plays for keeps." (Lincoln Child, number-one New York Times best-selling coauthor of the Pendergast series)

Enjoyable Read

Sometimes slow and confusing with a lot going on. However, storyline has twists and turns with a sense of realism, suspense and surprises. Overall, enjoyed Breakout.

Not sure which genre this book belongs...

Mystery? Thriller? Fantasy? This book is so much fun to listen to. It’s kind of a cross between Die Hard and the Attica prison riots only this takes place in a prison in Florida. In a prison containing 800 inmates there is only one female prison guard. The prison is in the path of two major hurricanes that are on a straight path towards one another. There’s flooding from the bottom and high winds ripping chunks of building away at the top. And to make things really special, when the correction officers abandoned the building one bright officer decided to unlock all of the cells to give the inmates a chance of surviving the storm. The result is total BEDLAM!
This book requires suspicion of all belief and common sense BUT there is great action and suspense from beginning to end. I really got caught up in listening knowing there is zero plausibility in a scenario like this.
Jason Culp does a superb job narrating.
If you looking for a fun book then I would recommend this one. If you’re looking for believable, take a pass.

Boring

This book was boring from start to finish. The whole story was about a prison breakout during a hurricane. No story to it at all.
