About this listen

After years of rubbing elbows with Austin’s elite, Sunday Frederick jumps at the chance to escape the concrete jungle and practice natural medicine in her beloved hometown. But returning to the sleepy East Texas community of Old Salem with a fast-talking fiancé in tow proves more of a challenge than she ever expected, as she struggles to balance his ambitions with the best interests of her family and the surrounding community.

When a wildcrafting assignment plunges her into the swampy, mosquito-infested river bottom of her youth—and face-to-face with local rebel, Eli LeBlanc—Sunday finds herself torn between everything she thought she wanted and everything she can’t live without.

Told in an authentic Southern voice, Backwater is that rare breed of novel that will please every type of listener while shining light on the struggle of rural communities everywhere to retain not only their cultural identity, but the environment on which it depends.

It should be a movie.

If you love Nicholas Sparks books, you will adore this. I’ve been on a suspense kick and this was just the palette cleanser I needed. Vivid descriptions of characters and the south. Narrator did a spectacular job as well. I can’t wait for the next Kate Boudreaux book.

Superb!!

Loved hearing all the familiar names of the places where I'm from! My husband was born and raised in Devil's Pocket!! This should definitely be made into a movie!!

A must read, especially for the fellow East / SETX natives!

If you grew up in or around SETX this book needs to be on your list! Kate Boudreaux will reel you in with this one! Equipped with a love hate relationship, cult gossip, ghost stories and bluebell that takes place in Old Salem and Devils Pocket 🖤📚 I highly recommend!

The perfect reader for a moving southern story

A sweet story with some really lovable characters and exceptionally well done by the reader. She uses a genuine accent and voice that makes you feel like you know the characters. The story is somewhat predictable at times, but also presents some unexpected tidbits.

The true Southeast Texas

Having been raised in these neck of the woods, I couldn't help but smile 😊

Great voices make great books!

I love listening to a book while I walk my dogs. I was on Goodreads this morning looking for a new Audible book since I just finished my other one. I'm on Chapter 4 already! I have stopped reading so many books because I didn't like the voice or they didn't match the story. Having the right voice for an Audible book can make or break it. No lie.
Lauren has the best voice for this book, and the author's writing flows beautifully. So classic.

Excellent….sequel please.

Oh how I love this book! I’m ready for more of Eli and Sunday. I want to know about Momma Pearl’s younger years.

A fascinating exploration of life and love in the bayous of the Deep South.

Kate Boudreaux’ novel strikes the perfect balance between an electrifying love story and an immersion into the interesting lives of people inhabiting the bayous of the Deep South. It was a wonderful experience to get to know the characters, their relationships and struggles, as well as to be confronted with the challenges that modern development poses to the natural environment and cultural traditions of a place. Well done and beautifully narrated!
