Publisher's summary

City girl Calla Fletcher attempts to reconnect with her estranged father, and unwittingly finds herself torn between her desire to return to the bustle of Toronto and a budding relationship with a rugged Alaskan pilot in this masterful new romance from acclaimed author K.A. Tucker.

Calla Fletcher was two when her mother took her and fled the Alaskan wild, unable to handle the isolation of the extreme, rural lifestyle, leaving behind Calla’s father, Wren Fletcher, in the process. Calla never looked back, and at 26, a busy life in Toronto is all she knows. But when her father reaches out to inform her that his days are numbered, Calla knows that it’s time to make the long trip back to the remote frontier town where she was born.

She braves the roaming wildlife, the odd daylight hours, the exorbitant prices, and even the occasional - dear God - outhouse, all for the chance to connect with her father: a man who, despite his many faults, she can’t help but care for. While she struggles to adjust to this new subarctic environment, Jonah - the quiet, brooding, and proud Alaskan pilot who keeps her father’s charter plane company operational - can’t imagine calling anywhere else home. And he’s clearly waiting with one hand on the throttle to fly this city girl back to where she belongs, convinced that she’s too pampered to handle the wild.

Jonah is probably right, but Calla is determined to prove him wrong. As time passes, she unexpectedly finds herself forming a bond with the burly pilot. As his undercurrent of disapproval dwindles, it’s replaced by friendship - or perhaps something deeper? But Calla is not in Alaska to stay and Jonah will never leave. It would be foolish of her to kindle a romance, to take the same path her parents tried - and failed at - years ago.

It’s a simple truth that turns out to be not so simple after all.

Editor's Pick

It just hits the sweet spot
"For me, this was the kind of love story that arrived exactly when I needed it. I felt like I got to escape to faraway Alaska and ride along on this adventure with Calla, our protagonist. The dialogue is so cute and funny between Calla and her enemy-guy, Jonah. I praised narrator Rebekkah Ross again and again for her delivery while I laughed. I was reminded of Nora Roberts’s Northern Lights, the feeling of warm campfires on damp nights, and the scent of fresh mountain air. How I miss it."

Nor your average romance novel

Get ready for an emotional roller coaster, compelling plot lines, dynamic characters, and just the right level of steamy romance, even though this book is just so much more than the bedroom scenes.

Did not want this book to end!

I initially chose this book for a nice light read, and because I was drawn to its Alaskan setting. However, I came to find the characters very endearing and found myself thinking about them long after the book was over. I did not want it to end! Surpassed my expectations, for a fiction love story.

It made me laugh and cry!

This was a great book. It had me laughing at times and crying at other times. It was a nice story with good characters and I enjoyed the ending, even though it wasn't exactly how I thought it would be.

So good!!!!

Wow this book is good. I loved the two protagonists so much, you can’t beat the whole I hate you then I love you bit. I would have given this 5 stars if the ending was a bit more satisfying though, I wish we got a little bit more at the end. The narrator was great!!

A wonderful surprise

I have never heard of this author before, and purchased this on a whim, and I am so glad I did. The narrator was also new to me. She made the characters come alive. The story made me nervous for a bit, because the female lead annoyed the check out of me at first, but that is part of the beauty of it. The evolution of the characters is so believable. The highlight for me was the way she learned from her experiences, and gradually became a person you could like. There are heartbreaking elements, no spoilers, all both believable as well as riveting. I found myself listening everywhere, at work, during workouts, and when I should have been sleeping. The ending was a surprise to me, I liked how it was unexpected yet believable. I will most certainly be seeking out more from this author, and narrator as well. Excellent book and performance.
