About this listen

A practical guide to understanding, managing and overcoming anxiety and panic attacks by best-selling author and GP Harry Barry. Do you or does someone you love suffer from general anxiety, social anxiety, panic attacks, a phobia, obsessive-compulsive disorder or post-traumatic stress disorder? Or are you a health-care worker treating people with these disorders? Then this audiobook is for you.

Dr Harry Barry combines a deep knowledge of the inner workings of the mind and brain with a wealth of experience treating patients as a GP to offer a way out of the fear, worry and shame of anxiety. In this wise, supportive book, Dr Barry explains clearly and simply what it is about our minds and brains that generates the symptoms of anxiety. Life-changing and delightful to listen to

I’ll spare the intimate details of my experience with GAD and Panic Disorder, but know that this audiobook fundamentally changed the way I view my anxiety and my relationship and reactions to it. Years of therapy helped in many ways, but never went through the whole process of teaching me to understand my anxiety on a biological level, address all of the physical symptoms I might experience, address the best way to handle my panic attacks, and recognize how I can shape the way my anxious brain operates in the future. Dr. Harry Barry does exactly this, and he does it exceptionally well and all within one book. A must-read if you struggle with panic, GAD, and/or social anxiety.

Cons: the examples can get repetitive, however I was able to identify myself across many of the different examples, so I didn’t mind. Also, “Dr Jim”, the doctor in the book, handles his patient’s experiences in a reassuring way, yet it can come across as dismissive, especially when one has experienced a level of trauma from their disorders. Lastly, my first experience with panic and the resulting fear of it wasn’t addressed in the book, so it took longer for me to accept that my panic isn’t dangerous. However, in conjunction with therapy I was able to overcome this issue. Just know that your own specific experiences may not be outlined in the book.

very repetitive but perhaps by design

understanding some of the inner workings of the brain and hearing from the collection of stories from others with similar issues seems to be helping.
