Publisher's summary

The Blues were born out of need, anger, and pride. Murder comes from those same dark places. Memphis has both.

One of Memphis' most seductive and notorious socialites has vanished. Either she's off on another drunken escapade or the disappearance is something much more frightening. What begins as an ordinary day's work for Detective Billy Able quickly grows into a complex spider's web of tragedy, mystery, suspicion, and sordid secrets including a few of Billy's own.

With the help of Mercy Snow, the estranged sister of the missing socialite, Billy follows a twisted trail of human frailty and corruption to disturbing truths that undermine everything he thought he knew about himself and the people he loves.

Critic reviews

"Memphis, the Mississippi River, and the underbelly of human nature they're all exposed in the dark brew of this fast-paced Southern Gothic suspense. Page-turning and atmospheric, this tightly-plotted novel turns the screws and sends readers racing to its surprise conclusion." (Michael Finger, Senior Editor, Memphis Magazine)

Great story and excellent reader.

What made the experience of listening to A Little Death in Dixie the most enjoyable?

I read this book in print form and loved it. I wanted to see how it translated into audio. I have to say I actually enjoyed it better in audio than in print. I lived in Memphis several years ago, and the story is so Memphis that I felt as if I was back there.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

The book is very Southern gothic, along the lines of James Lee Burke. The story builds in layers, introducing you to characters you love and characters you love to hate, and it has enough twists and turns to keep you guessing until the end.

What about Jeffrey Kafer’s performance did you like?

I was worried that a reader wouldn't be able to pick up on the nuances that are so very much Memphis. Jeffrey Kafer did such a great job that I found myself unable to turn off the book, even though I already knew the plot. I'd definitely listen to other books read by this reader.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

No one is really who you think they are.

Great Mystery! Great Narration!

A Little Death in Dixie by Lisa Turner is a great listen. I love how the author wrote the layers to this southern story. There are some unexpected twists that I really enjoyed. Jeffrey Kafer was great performing the book. He added the right emotions to his voice and I could hear the various characters speaking. I was fortunate to receive this review copy audiobook at my request. I will definitely listen to more books by this author and narrator.

Nonstop Action!

A Little Death in Dixie is jam packed action. I absolutely loved it! Our hero, Det. Billy Able, wakes up thinking this is going to be a regular day, but nothing could be further from the truth! Within a short period of time he find himself in a whirlwind of lies and deceit with his partner, his former lover and her husband, his boss, and a judge all in on the action. The writer gives us a wonderful taste of Old Southern charm. The narrator, Jeffrey Kafer, helps with the Memphis, Tennessee flavor. I recommend this audiobook and I can't wait to read the next in the series.

Excellent Read

What made the experience of listening to A Little Death in Dixie the most enjoyable?

I thought it was a great "who done it" story. It moved through the plot developement at a good pace, and the characters emerged as people

What did you like best about this story?

This book entertained me. I don't try to solve mystery stories; I'd rather be carried along by them, and this one did just that for me. Thank you Lisa.

What about Jeffrey Kafer’s performance did you like?

Jeffrey's performance must have been pretty good, because I was following the story and didn't really take note of the reading.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I didn't have an extreme reaction to this book, and I suspect that the author didn't intend that for her readers.

narrator was terrible!

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

This is a story set in the South. The narrator should have had a southern accent. An editor/author should have told him how to pronounce Tunica, Poplar, etc. He mispronounced many other words as well. I did not like the roughness of his voice. The story did not lend itself to that kind of characterization.

What was most disappointing about Lisa Turner’s story?

I mostly chose it because it was set in Memphis where I've lived for 30+ years. It's always fun to know the settings. I might have enjoyed the story itself more if I had like the reader.

Terrible

Bad book; even worse narrator. So poorly written, it was painful to hear - especially from this narrator.
