WOW! I did not see that ending coming!

Lots of novels have surprising twists and turns that the reader may not see coming. A Case of Redemption has an almost uniquely stunning twist at the end.

I seldom down rate a audio novel based on narration, but in this case I felt the narration, while adequate, was so far below the quality of the story that it lowered the the listener experience.

It earned an extra star in the last few hours.

This book rolls along just like you think it will. And then things change. The author deserves a huge amount of credit for taking the plot and standing it on its head. I just wish the book had been more engaging all the way through. Don't get me wrong. It's not a bad book. It just doesn't have the tenseness all the way through like most good legal thrillers.

Adam Metzger’s novel A Case of Redemption is a legal thriller on the lines of John Grisham’s. As a lawyer in his day job, he has the trial pace, the witness panic and the ability to roll with the punches down.


Dan Sorenson, this books protagonist, is a highly successful Madison Avenue defense attorney with a high profile win under his belt. After his wife and daughter are killed instantaneously he trades in his ambition for a booze filled depression. This book is his recovery with another high profile trial.


There is no sluggish part in this novel. It’s slick, fresh and smooth; a real page turner. I wouldn’t call this a thriller more a gasper. Though there are many twists and turns - you are not on the edge of your seat racked with worries – more not being able to put it down for you cannot imagine how this will turn out.

I have a few pesky complaints…. The character’s profiles were quite similar to those in his previous book that I also enjoyed. The judge was a bit over the top. All in all though I still am a charter member of the Adam Mitzner fan club and look forward to his future works.

Not quite

I see that I am not part of the majority on this one, as A Case for Redemption has received rave reviews from most review sources. I thought there was something not quite authentic about it.

Some of it was the story. For an attorney with as much talent and hours in the profession as the main character was supposed to have, he made some very amateurish assumptions and mistakes. Understandably, he was not a criminal defense attorney, but some of his mistakes seemed like first year law school material. The author does eventually explain "why", but until that point the main characters blunders were difficult to accept.

And then there was the narrator. Kevin T Collins is an accomplished voice artist. His reading of the secondary characters in this novel was well done and believable. What was not believable was his narration of the main character, and since the book is told in the first person, that was most of the story.. Maybe it is because I have spent time with attorneys, but he just didn't sound like one to me. I found it distracting and even occasionally annoying, especially when his voice would quiver over the top.

Those two issues aside, I did finish the story because I found it interesting enough to spend the time. It wasn't intended to be a heart-pounding thriller, and it held true to that. It was a legal story with mystery and suspense, and on that it did deliver.

A MUST READ, er, HEAR! Engaging and well read!

Would you listen to A Case of Redemption again? Why?

I'm not certain I'd listen to the same book right away, knowing the ending, but it's very entertaining. The narrator is absolutely terrific in all voices, both ethnic and southern accented.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Absolutely couldn't wait to hear this book READ aloud. The narrator seemed to capture the sound and heart of each character.

What about Kevin T. Collins’s performance did you like?

Everything!

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The way he lowered his voice at the saddest, heartfelt moments... it was so appropriate. His voice inflections were spot-on.His descriptions of people helped you SEE them in your mind's eye.

This was one of the best reads/listens in a long time, and this authors now in my top 5 faves of all time, that's for sure. It's a very engaging listen. I enjoyed the detailed expounding on trial procedure because it was for the sake of the story. This is one amazing author!

A difficult narration to listen to.

LD I liked his character and felt he was truly innocent

He shows the characters true emotion in his voice and keeps you interested

Yes! When we found out what happened to LD and Nina's role in it

Predictable

Where does A Case of Redemption rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Average. Overall, it was fair, but about the only thing that probably surprised me was that Nuts(?) was the one in the photo, other than that, the betrayal and the actual motivation, murderer and outcome were, IMHO, predictable. Some books that stretched me are older and they include Presumed Innocent, Child 44, The Lincoln Lawyer to name a few, this book fell far below them in comparison.

Would you be willing to try another book from Adam Mitzner? Why or why not?

Yes, but depends on the overall storyline.

Have you listened to any of Kevin T. Collins’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No, but his portrayals were very good and enhanced a lot of what took place in the story, which is why I gave the overall score of 4, his performance helped that a lot.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Nothing. Just a read to occupy time, it didn't tug at anything or create any heartfelt emotion noteworthy.

Some people will find this book a great read, and we all come with different expectations and so just because it did nothing for me doesn't mean the next person will agree with what I got, but that's the point of reading/listening for oneself.

it was ok. the thrid part of the book was the best.

maybe. i would hesitate but if the book sounded real good i would give them another chance.

i think the defendant constantly lying shows that a lot of time is saved by telling your lawyer the truth. the constant lying of the defendant made the book drawn out. if the lawyers knew the facts correctly the book would have moved a lot smoother.
