During a weekend spree in Cape Town, a young, rich Afrikaner fatally injures a teenage street girl with his Range Rover but is too drunk to know he has hit her. His companions - who do know - leave the girl to die.

The driver's mother, a self-made mining magnate named Margot Le Roux, intends to keep her son in ignorance of his crime. But by chance, the case falls to the relentless Warrant Officer Turner of Cape Town Homicide.

When Turner travels to the remote mining town that Margot owns - including the local police and private security force - he finds her determined to protect her son at any cost. As the battle of wills escalates and the moral contradictions multiply, Turner won't be bought and won't be bullied, and when they try to bury him, he rediscovers, during a desperate odyssey to the very brink of death, a long-forgotten truth about himself....

By the time Willocks' tale is finished, 14 men have died, and he shows once again that he is the laureate of the violent thriller.

it was worth every minute of listening and the narrator, Peter Noble was absolutely perfect for the beautifully poetic writing style of Tim Willocks.

I didn’t think this was for me after the first few minutes, then it took off. This new to me author is excellent, the narrator is also excellent. Hard to listen to, not hard to understand the terrible history of that country. Can’t recommend it enough.

This really was great both in the narration and the crazy story of retribution and revenge. I highly recommend it. Violent yes but not so that it seems unneeded and unbelievable nor distracting from the storyline.
I would love to see a sequel though this book does wrap up into a very tidy ending. I loved the main character.

I would like this to be the first story in a new series. It was pretty original and very believable. It had a great protagonist that was committed to adhering to his own sense of right and wrong.

Man, I loved this book! The humor, death, politics, all was just spot on. I wish there was a series of books with Turner. I love this straight edged black police man with green eyes in a land where black is wack. Just keep listening if it's slow to start, honestly. I almost gave up and I forget the one line that kept me in, but it will get ya!!

I discovered this author many years ago and was immediately caught up with his descriptions, setting the stage so to speak, so you can almost feel the heat of the sun or the smell of sweat, in the scene. This novel was a treat.

Any book by Tim Willocks is well worth reading

I loved this book! Very different from my usual crime stories. Perfectly gruesome in spots. Narrator was amazing. Great job switching back and forth between accents and cadences.
