Fugitive Colors is a gripping debut novel of an artist's indomitable vengeance after World War II. Julian Klein, a young American artist, rebels against his religious upbringing and is eager for the artistic freedom of 1930s Paris. He flees Chicago only to find himself consumed by a world in which a paintbrush is far more lethal than a gun. An artist turned spy, Julian at the same time competes with jealous inferior artists who feverishly attempt to destroy those with true talent. Love, friendship, betrayal, and passion, as Julian learns, are never black and white.
Like an abstract painting, Julian's turbulent journey is emotionally charged as he tries to save his friends and salvage some of the most beloved pieces of modern art - including his own. The story of Julian and his friends' artistic endeavors is inspired by a harrowing and little-known historical truth: the official Nazi exhibition of "Degenerate Art," which opened in Munich on July 19, 1937, one day after the first Great German Art Exhibition. Lisa Barr's unrelenting prose brings to life artists who were made to endure miserable oppression - sometimes death - under the brutal Nazi regime. This is an audiobook of suspense, love, mystery, and, above all, the power of art.

Reseñas editoriales
Lisa Barr's historical fiction debut, Fugitive Colors, tells the story of artist-slash-spy Julian Klein, an American Jew who seeks the creative fervor or 1930s Paris, only to find himself involved in the struggles of war. Inspired by the Nazi exhibition "Degenerate Art", which aimed to discredit all of modern art, this novel is tense and gripping, a deeply affecting portrayal of the terrible trials of art under the Nazi regime. Prolific, award-winning voice actor Jonathan Davis' dramatic, emotional inflection elevates this story, making it an engrossing listen.

I learned so much about why the Nazis turned on modernist painters, and the lengths they went to as they destroyed and exploited art and artists. I knew they had stolen a great deal of art but wasn't aware of the breadth of the stealing and the treachery involved. This is a fictional account - many of the artists mentioned didn't exist - but it captures the spirit behind the actions.
The writing is engrossing, though I had to put it aside after reading some sections just to take a breath, before jumping back into the callous horror of the Nazi regime. It cuts too close to what we're experiencing in the US and other countries right now.
Hearing Julian's thoughts about painting gave me a new appreciation of avant-garde art of the 1920s and 30s.
This is a book I won't forget.
Hear this if you are an artist, or love art
