"This fully animated portrait of Nancy Wake...will fascinate readers of World War II history and thrill fans of fierce, brash, independent women, alike." (Lisa Wingate, number one New York Times best-selling author of Before We Were Yours)

Based on the thrilling real-life story of socialite spy Nancy Wake, comes the newest feat of historical fiction from the New York Times best-selling author of I Was Anastasia, featuring the astonishing woman who killed a Nazi with her bare hands and went on to become one of the most decorated women in WWII.

Told in interweaving timelines organized around the four code names Nancy used during the war, Code Name Hélène is a spellbinding and moving story of enduring love, remarkable sacrifice, and unfaltering resolve that chronicles the true exploits of a woman who deserves to be a household name.

It is 1936, and Nancy Wake is an intrepid Australian expat living in Paris who has bluffed her way into a reporting job for Hearst newspaper when she meets the wealthy French industrialist Henri Fiocca. No sooner does Henri sweep Nancy off her feet and convince her to become Mrs. Fiocca than the Germans invade France and she takes yet another name: a code name.

As Lucienne Carlier, Nancy smuggles people and documents across the border. Her success and her remarkable ability to evade capture earns her the nickname "The White Mouse" from the Gestapo. With a five million-franc bounty on her head, Nancy is forced to escape France and leave Henri behind. When she enters training with the Special Operations Executives in Britain, her new comrades are instructed to call her Hélène. And finally, with mission in hand, Nancy is airdropped back into France as the deadly Madam Andrée, where she claims her place as one of the most powerful leaders in the French Resistance, armed with her ferocious wit, her signature red lipstick, and the ability to summon weapons straight from the Allied Forces.

But no one can protect Nancy if the enemy finds out these four women are one and the same, and the closer to liberation France gets, the more exposed she - and the people she loves - become.

Reseñas de la Crítica

"A compulsively readable account of a little-known yet extraordinary historical figure - Lawhon's best book to date." (Kirkus Reviews, starred review)

“Magnificent. . . Lawhon carries us into the heart of the French resistance [and] into the mind of a badass heroine with uncanny instincts who takes on the Nazis and men’s arrogant sexism with uncommon bravado. . . Even long after the last page is turned, this astonishing story of Wake’s accomplishments will hold readers in its grip.” (Booklist, starred)

“A spellbinding work of historical fiction. . . [and] one of the most sensual romance novels you’ve ever read. . . She is real, this really did happen is the mantra you may find yourself repeating, in awe of every page.” (Bookpage, starred)

This story was so compelling but I was even more impressed when I learned that the essential story is true. A wonderful narration by a gifted narrator. How many accents and personas could one person inhabit? Endless it seems. Three cheers for Barrie Kreinik. Male narrator Peter Ganim also lent a perfect gravitas to this excellent story. I will listen a second time.

Great narration and great storytelling. I read a lot of historical fiction and this fiction based on fact was excellent. It was very hard to put down and I found myself listening to the audible book almost continuously for a couple days.

Heart warming. Heart stopping.

This books is the kind of book you want to read over and over again. The story is compelling and fascinating. It makes me want to learn more about Nancy Wake and her story. The narration is also really well done. I was sorry when it was over.

I enjoyed this book for its cultural and historical aspects. I don’t really care for love stories, which was woven into this book; however, these parts did not take away from the overall affect for me. I can see why the author’s friend asked her to write a book about this courageous woman. Some sections were disturbing but whenever you read books or watch things related to the Holocaust, this is to be expected. I would recommend this book to others who appreciate historical fiction.

Great story. Be sure to pay attention to the chapter call outs so you know what year and location the story is heading into. Otherwise you will be a bit confused.

Excellent historical fiction.

Thoroughly enjoyed this story. Watched a documentary of Nancy Wake on Amazon Prime.

The story line stays close to the documentary.

A really good story!!!

Until listening to the authors note at the end, I was unaware that Nancy Wale was a real person. This fact makes her story all the more fascinating. Nancy displayed immense courage and grace in the most unimaginable circumstances and I feel this novel did her honor. I enjoyed the split timeline and felt it brought interest to the story as opposed to one that was purely chronological. I also appreciated the tidbits of Henri’s perspective as it broke up the female voice and character. Overall this book is worth the read/listen and brings light to the role of women like Nancy who played a major part in the defeat of the Nazis through her leadership in the French resistance.

A fascinating tale

I think the story speaks for itself. This is not about character development...it’s about what happened in the life of a true hero fight evil in a bloody war. The story is told well, narration is excellent and the reader is always engaged in the moment. The author is a bit unorthodox in how the story is stitched together, but it all works. I enjoyed it very much.
