Historia
Winston Smith works in the Ministry of Truth—or Minitrue as it is called in Newspeak—where he alters newspapers and reports to follow the arbitrary dictates of Big Brother’s propaganda. Beneath his outward conformity, however, Winston dreams of sharing his treasonable thoughts and breaking through the loneliness in which he lives. Thus he takes his first dangerous steps, writing a diary of his doubts and then falling in love with a woman of the Party, the beautiful and brave Julia.

Historia
In this shocking memoir, a former FBI informant reveals what he learned from successfully infiltrating the Ku Klux Klan in the backwoods of the Sunshine State, uncovering details about the hate group’s structure and its modern far-right spinoffs which are operating to achieve the same goal: inciting a second civil war by whatever violent means necessary.

Historia
A silent epidemic of chronic illnesses afflicts tens of millions of Americans: These are diseases that are poorly understood, frequently marginalized, and can go undiagnosed and unrecognized altogether. Renowned writer Meghan O’Rourke delivers a revelatory investigation into this elusive category of “invisible” illness that encompasses autoimmune diseases, post-treatment Lyme disease syndrome, and now long COVID, synthesizing the personal and the universal to help all of us through this new frontier.

Historia
Since he was a small boy, Mosab Hassan Yousef has had an inside view of the deadly terrorist group Hamas. The oldest son of Sheikh Hassan Yousef, a founding member of Hamas and its most popular leader, young Mosab assisted his father for years in his political activities while being groomed to assume his legacy, politics, status...and power. But everything changed when Mosab turned away from terror and violence and embraced instead the teachings of another famous Middle East leader.

Historia
Many of us feel trapped in a grind of constant change: rolling news cycles, the chatter of social media, our families split along partisan lines. We feel fearful and tired, on edge in our bodies, not quite knowing what has us perpetually depleted. For Katherine May, this low hum of fatigue and anxiety made her wonder what she was missing. Could there be a different way to relate to the world, one that would allow her to feel more rested and at ease, even as seismic changes unfold on the planet?

Love her writing, not as good as her first book
Revisado: 12-26-23
It wasn’t as clearly laid out and bursting from the pages as the first book, but maybe that’s because it was so challenging to get the words to come for the author. She says she was in a dry spell, and it’s good writing off what it is.

Historia
Sometimes you slip through the cracks: unforeseen circumstances like an abrupt illness, the death of a loved one, a breakup, or a job loss can derail a life. These periods of dislocation can be lonely and unexpected. For May, her husband fell ill, her son stopped attending school, and her own medical issues led her to leave a demanding job. Wintering explores how she not only endured this painful time, but embraced the singular opportunities it offered. Ultimately Wintering invites us to change how we relate to our own fallow times.

Best book I’ve read all year
Revisado: 12-16-23
From word choice to the structure of each chapter to the reading itself, this book was delightful, poignant, and desperately-needed. I don’t often read books a second time through, but I might make an exception for this one.
I particularly resonated with the way that her brain works because mine is very similar. She draws connections between things. She is learning about life or the world around her, such as the habits of wolves, or bees, or how to practice polar swimming, as a means of treating inflammation. I am also a teacher, I also lost my voice for a period of time and was treated and found out that it was a symptom of psychology and not physiology directly. I felt like I was losing my voice in the world around me, and my voice in my own throat disappeared.
There is so much about this story, and this way of living that resonates with me and I have learned a lot, and I hope to continue sharing from my own wintering .
God bless!

Historia
Growing up gifted and working-class poor in the foothills of the Ozarks, Monica and Darci became fast friends. The girls bonded over a shared love of reading and learning, even as they navigated the challenges of their declining town and tumultuous family lives—broken marriages, alcohol abuse, and shuttered stores and factories. They pored over the giant map in their middle school classroom, tracing their fingers over the world that awaited them, vowing to escape. In the end, Monica left Clinton for college and fulfilled her dreams; Darci did not.

Important story
Revisado: 12-15-23
I really enjoyed the story, though, I didn’t think the writing or the presentation were the best. The reading had lots of pauses for intake of breath that I don’t think I noticed in other audiobooks. I read Lecrae’s “I am restored” during and it didn’t have any breathy intakes between words. I’m not sure why this was so noticeable or if it’s normal in other audiobooks, but that’s the only way that I read, and I’ve never noticed it before, and it really irritated me.
Other than that, I felt that the bias of the author, especially against religion, was far more than professional. That’s fine, it’s more of her memoir, but when she’s presenting so many important facts and such good data, it’s hard to accept and follow when, at one point, she will dive into facts, and at the next it will be pure opinion, and a lot of vitriol against the church.
In one chapter, she describes how the church was involved in everything from soup, kitchens and clothing drives and things like that too politics. In the next line, she says that they didn’t really help the peoples basic needs, which soup, kitchens, and clothing drives. Feels like it’s helping the peoples needs.
Her point is that praying about things was often a scapegoat for taking action against larger problems, but I feel like her personal opinions and intense emotions kind of water down the presentation of that point by causing her to slip into less than factual and clear at points.

Historia
I Am Restored tells the untold story of how Lecrae's past nearly ruined his future—until he learned that the wounds we carry can have the potential to be unlikely guides to healing and freedom for ourselves and others. He documents the shattering yet hopeful story of how he faced the scars of his past—sexual abuse, physical trauma, addiction, and depression—and emerged more human than ever. This is a hopeful, inspiring charge to start your journey to healing today. No matter what your past has held, God is near you, he hears you, and he's not done writing your story.

Historia
The Roaring Twenties—the Jazz Age—has been characterized as a time of Gatsby frivolity. But it was also the height of the uniquely American hate group, the Ku Klux Klan. Their domain was not the old Confederacy, but the Heartland and the West. They hated Blacks, Jews, Catholics and immigrants in equal measure, and took radical steps to keep these people from the American promise. And the man who set in motion their takeover of great swaths of America was a charismatic charlatan named D.C. Stephenson.

Quaint story but super preachy
Revisado: 12-17-22
The story lack subtly in a lot of areas. It’s super preachy. The theme of everybody being different and not being OK is great and one that I love, but every straight couple had something wrong with them, and only the gay couples were the good ones. Exaggerated.
There’s a whole moment where one character literally preaches at the audience for paragraph after paragraph…it’s a great story but over the top preachy.
