Acerca de esta escucha

"With meticulous detective work, Timothy Egan shines a light on one of the most sinister chapters in American history—how a viciously racist movement, led by a murderous conman, rose to power in the early twentieth century. A Fever in the Heartland is compelling, powerful, and profoundly resonant today."—David Grann, author of THE WAGER and KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON

A historical thriller by the Pulitzer and National Book Award-winning author that tells the riveting story of the Klan's rise to power in the 1920s, the cunning con man who drove that rise, and the woman who stopped them.

The Roaring Twenties—the Jazz Age—has been characterized as a time of Gatsby frivolity. But it was also the height of the uniquely American hate group, the Ku Klux Klan. Their domain was not the old Confederacy, but the Heartland and the West. They hated Blacks, Jews, Catholics and immigrants in equal measure, and took radical steps to keep these people from the American promise. And the man who set in motion their takeover of great swaths of America was a charismatic charlatan named D.C. Stephenson.

Stephenson was a magnetic presence whose life story changed with every telling. Within two years of his arrival in Indiana, he’d become the Grand Dragon of the state and the architect of the strategy that brought the group out of the shadows–their message endorsed from the pulpits of local churches, spread at family picnics and town celebrations. Judges, prosecutors, ministers, governors and senators across the country all proudly proclaimed their membership. But at the peak of his influence, it was a seemingly powerless woman–Madge Oberholtzer–who would reveal his secret cruelties, and whose deathbed testimony finally brought the Klan to their knees.

A FEVER IN THE HEARTLAND marries a propulsive drama to a powerful reckoning with one of the darkest threads in American history.

Reseñas de la Crítica

“Powerful . . . As a narrative, “A Fever in the Heartland” is gripping; as a rumination on the moral obscenity of white supremacy — whatever guises it wears — the book is damning.” The New York Times Book Review

"With meticulous detective work, Timothy Egan shines a light on one of the most sinister chapters in American history—how a viciously racist movement, led by a murderous conman, rose to power in the early twentieth century. A Fever in the Heartland is compelling, powerful, and profoundly resonant today." —David Grann, author of The Wager and Killers of the Flower Moon

"Egan has done it again, mastering another complicated American story with authority and surprising detail. The Klan here are not the nightriders of the late 19th century, but a retooled special interest group and unusually potent political power. The influence they wielded over states and policy should put a chill in every American. Bravo.” —Ken Burns

Editorial Review

A dark history brought to light
Having loved Timothy Egan’s Short Nights of the Shadow Catcher, I was excited to see this new release from him, which he narrates himself. I am endlessly fascinated by the turbulence of 1920s and ‘30s America. While I knew the KKK operated with extraordinary impunity in the ’20s, I didn’t realize just how much power they wielded, especially in Indiana. Apparently the "Grand Dragon," D.C. Stephenson, had a private police force of 30,000 men, the governor in his pocket, and the enthusiastic support of much of the citizenry. It is an eye-opening, chilling, and thorough account from Egan, a National Book Award winner, who expertly paces this dark narrative of how one woman used her pain and sacrifice to bring Stephenson down and halt the hatred threatening to swallow America whole. —Phoebe N., Audible Editor

Pulls no punches

A dimension of the history of the KKK that I was unaware of. this account goes into detail on abuse and corruption that is so profoundly evil that even the rest of the KKK cannot tolerate it. text is not for the faint of heart.

History of hate

This book is well written and narrated. It is hard to read about the brutality and hate but important to read as well.

Nobody Better Explains Americas Culture Of Hate Crimes

Timothy Egan has again seen a pattern in the social fabric of our country and rolled out a map that reveals a fabric of racism, greed and hate, where a goal to dominate and crush is achieved by recruiting members in government, religious organizations, financial institutes, social organizations, and wealthy business owners, and using that network to destroy minorities. For its members the social order traps it’s members into a speeding runaway train where violence is a creed is passengers cannot get off or stop, We might think all of this is new, or we’ve come too far, that we are civilized, but it’s all not so unbelievable. It’s happened before and will again, these raunchy dictators will take control when they bring the racist circus to town and offer an outlet & entertainment for the bored. His books explain so much, but leave me wishing it wasn’t so. Since Trump and Covid I’ve learned so much history to explain where this horrible violence comes from. I just wish we could find a way to stop the psychological need to dominate, to have all the money, or crush the competition. Why are so many so reckless of everything and everyone around them? You know, pick up that litter, smile on your sister, take a hand, forgive, live and let live. Is it breeding, environment, lack of love? It starts with us. We have to find a way. It’s so sad for the children of the world now that we are so far behind where we should be. After reading the book, while living in suburban middle class USA filled with pro Trump billboards on homes & neighbor fences, I feel like U.S.A. just had its progress award taken away. “Well, we thought USA had made more progress, but when Tim Egan replayed the video it turns out the country is pretty much back behind the line where it started out,”.

Important history superbly told

This is an important part of American history that still resonates, given the social and political climate that we have today. Stories like this shouldn’t be hidden from our collective consciousness.

Clear, insightful compelling and disturbing

This is been a tremendous read for those of us who believe in taking a close look at history. Egan is well known for his attention to detail, his pithy and colorful character studies, and the thoroughness of his research. This is a compelling and very disturbing chapter in American history, and the book emotionally sets the scene and unravels the tentacles of power.
