Cause of Death was pretty darn good

I liked Cause of Death. I usually go for cozy mystery books but like to branchout a bit to cleanse the palette. This was a good choice. Tough female lead, with a supporting grouchy side kick and family drama. It’s a good mix and works well to tell this story who's ending ends up being far from what you expect. The narrator, C.J. Critt, has the perfect voice for this story. Recommended.

I love a flash-back story & this is a good one.

I love the flash backs, I love the history. It was well done. The characters were full of life and interesting. The story had suspense, love, family drama and some unexpected twists. I liked that. The love scenes were a little too long & detailed as well.
The one thing that really took me out of the story was the intermittent male voice narrating the story. I really don't like the chapter by chapter switch. Pick one or the other to narrate the whole story. Hearing the female lead in a female voice for a chapter then having her voice completely different in inflection and tone, read by a male, is really off-putting. And by the way the female narrator did a great voice for the sisters as well as the others. If the two read the story together each reading the appropriate roles, that would probably be fine. This voice and reading was good for the males but was not believable or persuasive as a female. Sorry.

Oh my goodness, so many unexpected turns. Even when you think you know how it will play out, you don't. I really did not expect that final bit. I recommend this book.

Interesting and unexpected

I saw life through the eyes of a black woman living in the segragated south. It was well written, informative and downright horrifying at times while still interjecting a bit of humor. As the protagonist moves forward in life I found her solutions to disruptions horrifying while empathizing with her plight and pain. I'm not sure if what I found lightly humorous was intended to be. I hope the story wasn't based in truth. Overall, I found the storytelling and her way of dealing with life entertaining except for a few events that happened to her. I'm not saying you should gleam solutions from this book but I found it eye-opening, having not lived during that time period nor as a black woman. Worth the read.

Jersey Girl Witch lol

Being from NJ, I was intrigued and pleasantly surprised by this book set. I enjoyed the fact that the main characters were from NJ & the narration was performed with a Jersey accent. The narration was good and the accents were fun. There was a lot of thought put into the interactions between characters and backstory. The details were disseminated where and when needed. I bought the next set in the series.

I love Amanda Ronconi's narration. She gives life to the characters.

Florida story written by a Brittish person

it's a decent story overall. it's weird in that the phrasing is from that of a British person, definitely not a Floridian. The virtual voice narration leaves a lot to be desired. this is the 1st virtually narrated book I've listened to. it's read with the wrong inflection and a monotone voice. It's really unfortunate AI at the time of the creation wasn't better. the other weird thing is that the virtual voice is British as well. It really throws the whole experience off. That said, because I live in Florida, I was spurred on to finish the book set. I did still gain some enjoyment from the experience.
To the authors: I think and hope you do better next time. You have the minds for written this type of story, why not base it in your homeland or write with American phrasing.

interesting story line and concepts

It took me a minute to get into the main character, Zara, and appreciate her snarkiness. After that, I was very interested in all the characters and found myself listening to the book even when I wasn't driving, which is when I generally listen to my audible. That says a lot. I'm now going to buy the next book. the 8 book collection was great.
