Okay - I couldn't get past how old it was
Revisado: 02-25-17
Very general information, most useful stuff was the questions to ask yourself. The biggest issue for me was getting over the way out of date references. This book was clearly made decades ago with a mindset from decades ago. If you're a women, be prepared for sexist examples throughout. If this has been updated to be more modern than I wouldn't have been distracted so much by the examples. The only saving grace was how really general they are.

Strong start but weak finish
Revisado: 01-30-17
The book was okay. It had promise when I started it but I did not learn a lot of new stuff past the first chapter. The examples seemed to degrade in quality as well and I found myself disappointed by the end. It was still useful if you know nothing on the subject but I think I was expecting something with more information to learn from.

Great performance, very basic story
Revisado: 08-21-16
I really enjoyed the voice performance, that was the best part of this audio book. The story isn't horrible, it just isn't good either. If you're a male computer nerd you may enjoy it more than others. Even though I consider myself one, I didn't enjoy it more. The light hearted behavior of all the characters made getting invested with anything in the story very difficult. There are no big reveals, surprises, or moments that make you think. This book is just a light hearted story without explanation or great detail of anything. I don't feel it is a necessary read.

Bill Bryson has been an enormously popular author both for his travel books and for his books on the English language. Now, this beloved comic genius turns his attention to science. Although he doesn't know anything about the subject (at first), he is eager to learn, and takes information that he gets from the world's leading experts and explains it to us in a way that makes it exciting and relevant.

One of the best books I've had the pleasure of reading
Revisado: 08-15-16
I love science and history and this book includes both. It was extremely well written, flowing through all subjects, diverting, returning, and taking you from the start to the end in such a smooth way. For the very broad subject matter it does an amazing job giving you enough of each subject to grow your curiosity while teaching you something. Read this book. It is worth it.

Historia
Zack Lightman has never much cared for reality. He vastly prefers the countless science-fiction movies, books, and videogames he's spent his life consuming. And too often, he catches himself wishing that some fantastic, impossible, world-altering event could arrive to whisk him off on a grand spacefaring adventure.

Entertaining, but nothing new for Sci-FI fans
Revisado: 07-30-15
I'm trying to be honest with myself on how I felt about this book. I enjoyed it, and listened through practically the whole thing in one sitting, but throughout the entire story I kept thinking how it just seemed to be a repeat of every science fiction plot that has taken place before. The funny thing is, the plot does this on purpose in a way, to sort of become a meta look upon itself and the genre, but there isn't a payout that elevates things to a new level in the end. Instead it just ends rather anti-climatically with one of the biggest science fiction stereotypes there is. Which I found a predictable disappointment. Only because it was the most obvious way to finish. Really what this book relies big on (similar to ready player one) is nostalgia. Nostalgia is good enough to keep me reading, but in the end when I reflect, it isn't enough to make me think it was a great read. Will Wheaton nailed it with the narration tho. Kudos to him.

Historia
Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he's alive - and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plainold "human error" are much more likely to kill him first.

I listen to a lot of audiobooks. I mean a LOT (lately it is 1 or so a day). This has been my favorite so far this year. It has everything that makes an amazing story and the performance by the narrator does a great job as well. I cannot think of anything to detract from the rating, it was that good. Give this a listen you will not regret it.

Technological advances have benefited our world in immeasurable ways, but there is an ominous flip side: our technology can be turned against us. Hackers can activate baby monitors to spy on families, thieves are analyzing social media posts to plot home invasions, and stalkers are exploiting the GPS on smart phones to track their victims’ every move. We all know today’s criminals can steal identities, drain online bank accounts, and wipe out computer servers, but that’s just the beginning.

A great listen with the perfect narrator that brings out the serious and worrying tone from the pages to your mind. Only downer for me was that I wished some topics were talked about in even more depth, but that would nearly double this already lengthy book.

Revisado: 05-01-15
The book is driven towards European audiences. Although many of the terms defined are not country specific, many of the examples given are European focused. More then likely the type of people reading this book are going to be aware of European events, but for some they may find references to not really help. Enjoyable listen none the less.

Historia
Morten Storm was an unlikely Jihadi. A six-foot-one red-haired Dane, Storm spent his teens in and out of trouble. A book about the Prophet Mohammed prompted his conversion to Islam, and Storm sought purpose in a community of believers. He attended a militant madrasah in Yemen, named his son Osama, and became close friends with Anwar al-Awlaki, the American-born terrorist cleric. But after a decade of Jihadi life, he not only repudiated extremism but, in a quest for atonement, became a double agent for the CIA and British and Danish intelligence.

Great listen even if you're not into spy stuff
Revisado: 04-15-15
This was very fun to listen to while also being educational. I learned a lot I didn't know about how the these different terrorism organizations worked and the intelligence service work done to fight against them. I tried to listen and take the info with a grain of salt, although most of it is likely true, these sort of stories can easily include embellishments with no real way of knowing. One nagging thing for me was how quickly Storm went from believer to spy. I wasn't sold that simply a crisis of identity alone would cause that sort of change, but who knows...

Revisado: 03-18-15
I don't know why I never read The Time Machine until now, it may have been due to that horrific movie version released years back, it put me off from thinking the story was any good, but I found an instantly enjoyment of this book. The scientific theorizing that occurs in the opening conversation drew my interest right in and before I knew it I was over halfway complete. It was a quick listen overall and a good piece of classic scifi literature and the tale as if from a scientific observer was unique compared to other modern scifi reads
