half-decent story, unnecessarily sexual
Revisado: 02-12-25
It seems like a very tired version of Piers Anthony, it really doesn't seem like his voice except the hyper-sexuality he so frequently employs. The maddening pronunciation of words like 'scimitar' (sim-eater) by the AI and the bad writing made me almost pull the plug several times but I finished because I always like Aladdin & Sinbad. I would not recommend unless you are just all out of wish list titles or credits.

maybe skip this one
Revisado: 08-27-24
I have read almost everything by Dean Koontz, this one is a stinker. First the narrators: the woman is loud and has no inflection so it sounds like she is droning on endlessly. The guy sounds like Jimmy Durante saying goodnight to Ms. Calabash (wherever she is) and he runs out of breath at the end of each sentence. Unlistenable. Then the stories are so un-koontz-like that they are dreadful. Not scary, not eerie, not interesting, and just a little too preachy for my tastes. Don't get me wrong, I love Koontz, just not this collection of his throw-aways that he probably didn't mean to be seen by anyone, much less heard.

Historia
In "Strange Highways," a floundering alcoholic gets a mysterious second chance to relive the night his life began its downward spiral 20 years ago. But on this dark journey, he’ll be supremely tested by conflict with his successful, charismatic older brother, his loss of faith, and the clash between good and the ultimate evil. Sink into this binge-worthy collection of beloved Koontz short stories, featuring denizens of hell, vengeful children, and eerily human-like robots that will send shivers down your spine.

Unbearable narrators
Revisado: 05-04-23
The stories were just average for Koontz, not bad but not great. But the narrator on some of the stories sounds like Jimmy Durante saying goodnight to Miss Kalabash. Try listening to that for 3 hours!! Overall, I would pass on this title.

Historia
In The Temple and the Lodge, Michael Baigent and Richard Leigh reveal the survival and evolution of a world-changing order through the birth of the Masonic lodge. Recounting the brutal events in the 14th century that led to the sudden disappearance of the Knights Templar - a powerful military and banking order founded in 1119 and active in the Crusades - the authors document the Templars' reappearance in the court of excommunicate Scottish king Robert the Bruce.

Great story, not-so-great narration
Revisado: 05-11-22
Very good book however it contradicts many "facts" presented in Baigent & Leigh's previous work "Holy Blood, Holy Grail" and is very speculative. Also it would be nice if the narrator learned how to pronounce many of the French and Scot names of cities and people, it is so far off as to be laughable, and please slow down!. I do overall highly recommend it!

Great story and acting! You really have to listen
Revisado: 03-17-22
Travis Beacham has written a great story and cast it so well that you will be, well...sucked right in. The production quality is so good that within only a few minutes you will feel more like you are watching a movie than listening to a book. To compliment the great story line, the voice acting is second to none, I hope this ensemble comes together again for a sequel!
Well done, Mr. Beacham.

Narrator drives me nuts
Revisado: 11-16-18
This is a great story, typical of Dean Koontz but the narrator makes every character sound like Shecky Green. Also his female voices sound really absurd. Aside of that I highly recommend the book!

Historia
An 11-year-old boy's violated corpse is found in a town park. Eyewitnesses and fingerprints point unmistakably to one of Flint City's most popular citizens. He is Terry Maitland, Little League coach, English teacher, husband, and father of two girls. Detective Ralph Anderson, whose son Maitland once coached, orders a quick and very public arrest. Maitland has an alibi, but Anderson and the district attorney soon add DNA evidence to go with the fingerprints and witnesses. Their case seems ironclad.

I liked the story, but Holly's voice....
Revisado: 06-07-18
Several reviews complained that the story is long-winded and repetitive...sorry this was your first Steven King book!! I found it compelling and well narrated (except for the voice characterization of Holly, but at least there were no shreaking flutes between chapters on this one). I half expected Roland Deschain to show up at the end of this one though, if the stories get any more interwoven we will have tommyknockers warring with vampires sometime in the near future. Overall a very good book.

The horrible flute sounds
Revisado: 05-29-18
While this has the usual excellence of SK's prose and the fantastic narration by Lindsay Crouse, the horrible screechy flute "noises" throughout nearly caused me to return this title several times. I highly recommend READING this book instead of listening to it. Please audible, have them strip out those horrible mind-numbing noises!!!!!!

Good story, problems with audio
Revisado: 01-25-18
What did you love best about The Long Walk?
Excellent plot, very compelling. Watching the characters develop is almost painful at times. (in a good way)
What other book might you compare The Long Walk to and why?
The running man
What about Kirby Heyborne’s performance did you like?
his characterization is superb. By the end of the first hour you know every character by voice and mannerisms. Outstanding.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
absolutely
Any additional comments?
dozens of times throughout the playback the narrator's last word of a sentence is clipped and the next sentence starts with no gap. I though it was my internet but the same thing occurs on my iPhone and at my work PC. It doesn't impact the story but it's really very annoying.

Anne Rice should make them erase this
Revisado: 03-16-13
Would you try another book from Anne Rice and/or Lindsay Crouse?
Lindsay Crouse is phenomenal, and Anne Rice is my favorite author but when they say *abridged*, they mean you get a completely watered down story. This amazing book was chopped into a horrible Readers' Digest diatribe.
What could Anne Rice have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
Not abridged it
What does Lindsay Crouse bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
I love her voice characterizations; I hope she does many more
